The fit out is perfect of this corner of the world with a nice, warm bar at the front that then leads down into a sunken area where you’ll find the open kitchen and additional seating.

Hearty sharing plates or “social starters” kick off  the menu and we decide on the very interesting smoked salt and pink peppercorn squid (£8).

After a single mouthful I can safely say that this squid is some of the best cooked I’ve had in London – and this is coming from a place specialising on meat so I doff my hat.

These are some big bones with perfectly cooked meat and even more perfect is the sauce accompanying them.

We’re guided towards the momentous 24 hour marinated sticky and smoky short rib, cooked over English Oak for 4 hours, then for a further 8 hours, low and slow – but we need a break from meat *ON* bones so instead move onto one of Stephen’s daily picks of premium British beef steaks for committed carnivores such as this sirloin (which is also available to share) that I pimped up into a surf and turf type deal.

Located on Old York Road, the all-day restaurant and late night bar, created by former nightclub owner Sachin Khanna (Libertine and Raffles) has all of the ingredients of a great get-together in your own back garden, only bigger, better and bubblier – the prosecco list alone is amongst the longest and best in town with a wide range of DOC label wines from the Veneto regions including Vaporetto and Valdobbiadene, as well as Skinny Prosecco.

Stephen takes centre stage in the open-plan kitchen, talking guests through the menu serving up succulent meats like house salted brisket hash with fried duck eggs for brunch, the soon-to-be-famous gargantuan sharing plates and selected cuts of beef big enough to share like the momentous 24 hour marinated short rib, cooked over English Oak for 4 hours and a further 8 hours of low and slow cooking making for a sticky and smoky carnivorous dream.

General Manager Adam Bylass, by way of Q Grill and Sushinho, helps you navigate the bar’s cocktail list that has a distinctive sunshine feel with notables like the Lemon Curd Collins, made with Beefeater Gin, lemon curd, yellow Chartreuse, lemon juice and tonic.

Using interesting ingredients from all over the world like tonka bean, which inspired the Illegal in America cocktail, means there are plenty of opportunities to excite your taste buds at the late night bar open until 1am.

MeatUp is designed by Keane Designs, the 50-cover restaurant and its 37-cover bar is set in an atrium with bare bricks, repurposed wood and a living wall of ivy creeping its way around the open-plan kitchen, dining counter and impressive sky light, evoking an urban back yard feel.

First, you'll be able to choose how you want the burger cooked - and they'll be allowing rare as an option - then you can choose your bun: a milk bun, a black charcoal bun or a festive red beetroot bun.

As for toppings, they include mac & cheese, short rib, triple cheese, seared foie gras and bacon.

And finally, they'll have a Christmas burger, of course.

That'll be a patty topped with roast turkey, bacon, pigs in blankets, stuffing, sliced brussels sprouts and brie, and cranberry sauce.

So that's your Christmas dinner AND dessert all in one burger.

A stroll down Old York Road shows that there is something of a gourmet centre springing up in the shadow of Wandsworth Town Station with quality butchers and other meat vendors trading alongside small cafés and independent shops.

If you can’t decide on first course then MeatUp have kindly come up with “social starters” offering you the chance to share platters of a selection from the starter menu: marinated sticky and smoky ribs and spiced chicken pieces, smoked salt pink peppercorn squid and roasted scallop (sufficient for four at £32).

For your main course choose from a selection of sublime comfort food: Tiger Prawn 4 Cheese mac (£14); Chargrilled sea bream fillet (£17) home-made potato dumplings (£12) and a choice of chicken, beef or veggie burger (£14/£13).

With a choice of cuts on the day, all roasts include braised red cabbage, perfect Yorkshire pudding, honey roast root veg, seasonal greens, roast potatoes and the most delicious sweet, savoury, ale and bone marrow gravy.

Light and sweet, but if chocolate’s more your thing then you’ll find fudge brownies alongside those other dependable menu classics: Sticky Toffee Pudding, Rhubarb Eton Mess, sorbet, ice-cream and a British cheeseboard.

A hip little BBQ and grill in Wandsworth Town.

Poor old Wandsworth has never had a lot going for it.

But step out of Wandsworth Town station and you enter an oasis of calm in the shape of Old York Road, an island in the surrounding sea of chaos.

To start, spare ribs saw three slabs of smoky pork lightly glazed with a BBQ sauce and served with a piquant red slaw.

Steaks (in various cuts and weights), sea bream and pork belly were all tempting, but we were won over by the short rib, a huge hunk of melt-in-the-mouth beef, licked with a spicy maple sauce, served on a bone literally too big for the plate (and only slightly marred by a lump of inedible fat at the base).
