An otherwise lovely pub making a flawed stab at ‘doing craft beer’.

In an age when every Wetherspoons in the land has a serviceable selection of craft beer in the fridge, any pub claiming to be ‘devoted to craft beer’ needs to get a few basic things right.

It needs to not present a six-quid can of porter with a dirty, straight-sided pint glass, on the understanding that beer of such expense is to be looked at and smelled, as well as tasted.

Done up in the same raided-charity-shop aesthetic that’s come to characterise south London pubs, WGT’s main room is a big, cosy space; ideal for wolfing down roasts or, if you’re four, chasing your brother until he smacks his head on a vintage coffee table.

I’m sure when the sun comes out even I will chill the fuck out about the sub-par craft beer standards at this otherwise likeable pub.

The Herne has one of the largest, loveliest and most child-friendly beer gardens in south London, and consequently any mildly clement day will see it packed with local families.

Inside, the bar ticks all the ‘fantasy pub’ boxes: real ale, decent wine list, posh crisps, wood panelling, leather sofas, real fire, discreet TV (big events get shown in the garden barn), loyal regulars, live music, a pub quiz… you name it.

The Herne closed for a major refurbishment in 2013, and one thing that got refurbed along with it is the food.

All the major bases of pub grub are covered – but there are also streaks of flair uch as broccoli tempura and Oxford Blue brûlée with toasted sourdough.

The wine list is succinct and fairly priced, but the star on the bar is the changing selection of well-kep cask ales.
