The French House

About us

For those who don't know us yet, The French House is a new vibrant neighbourhood eatery set up by a team that live in and love the South East London area bringing all of knowledge from our gastro backgrounds.

If you are just after a drink we have a well selected French wine list and a French themed cocktail list.

We also have a large selection of French and local craft beers.

All this served to the rhythm of French 60's Yéyé interior design and music.

Our exiting menu is changing monthly serving French classics using a modern twist.

The French House is a lovely little place with great service, amazing raclette and delicious fondue!

Deserts were nice - apple tart was light and fluffy, chocolate fondant hot and gooey but the vanilla ice cream served alongside was grainy with ice particles and tasted like a cheap supermarket brand.

The food was great and it was something different to all the pub grub on Lordship Lane but the service left a lot to be desired.

I hope that this was an off night and not representative of The French House, as the food itself was great, as was the wine!

And I can't say a bad word against the staff; the lady recognised me from the last time I was in and she was so welcoming and lovely.

The starter, a charcuterie board, was very nice and tasty, good choices.

Went mid week with a group of girls, atmosphere was lovely, wine choices were good with options for glasses, carafs or bottles.

Great restaurant, been a few times and it's always a good atmosphere and lovely food.

French onion soup was tasty and good tarte flambees for me and my friend.

Great food, friendly staff, good service.

The French is the ever-so-slightly upmarket cousin of the Coach & Horses.

Not everything is perfect – the red wine is headache inducing after the first sip – but the French has stories to tell.

The French will outlive them, and us, all.

If you like to drink in places where the history’s as important as the drinks list, the Grade II-listed French House should be on your list.

Charles de Gaulle used the pub as a workplace during World War II; Dylan Thomas and Francis Bacon both drank here… the list goes on.

It’s small, memento-filled, and very crowded when the place is busy.

You may end up joining the regulars on the pavement outside, but that’s just part of the French House experience.

This is Soho history.
