Perhaps it was their very greyness that prompted Hervé Regent to install a brasserie named after the painter here – next to The Lobster Pot, a 20-year-old fish restaurant he owns next door – and make it a family business by employing his eldest son front of house, and two others in the kitchen.

The sweet redcurrant sauce in which it sits is an able companion, but the absurdly unadventurous sautéed vegetables on his plate are an affront to the French imagination.

But it is the focus of a really thoughtful plate – confit apple, pommes purée, a red wine and truffle sauce and, best of all, a boudin antillais.

About £160 for dinner for four, including two bottles of wine and service This is the latest, and largest, venture from the highly regarded Arbutus/ Wild Honey team; a useful, if slightly pricey addition to Trafalgar Square It's expensive, but this smart brasserie of an unusually upmarket city-centre hotel offers a convincing pastiche of the classic Gallic experience Hidden away in the middle of the New Town, this traditional brasserie is well worth seeking out; packed on any given day

A true evocation of French flavour in a lovingly remodelled English pub in Kennington, Brasserie Toulouse-Lautrec offers atmospheric brasserie-style dining downstairs and first class refreshment and snacks in the piano and wine bar upstairs.

Fine French dishes on the menu include cote de boeuf, rump of French veal and snails cooked with lardons in a white wine sauce.

All of the house wines, available by the glass, caraf (half bottle) and bottle, are sourced from vines grown on land previously owned by Toulouse Lautrec.

Live jazz piano music is played every night at the restaurant's own baby grand piano.

At the Lobster Pot, which celebrates its 20th anniversary next year, you are greeted upon opening the door by the sound of seagulls, and the slatboard-panelled room is designed to look like the inside of a fishing skiff, complete with portholes, behind which fish swim.

It is all an expression of its owner, Hervé Regent, who arrived in the middle of the dinner service at the Toulouse Lautrec wearing a black frock coat, a cowboy-style spaghetti string tie, with brilliantined hair, and the kind of moustache joke shops model theirs on.

On the menu cauliflower soup is first referred to as Crème du Barry – Comtesse du Barry, mistress of Louis XV, was obsessed by cauliflower – and the dishes are rich with the likes of duck confit, chicken livers and sauces mounted with enough cream to put a herd of Friesians on overtime.

We'll let that pass because this was the kind of food you expect from a French restaurant in Kennington run by a man in a shoestring tie called Hervé.

It came with a mushroom crème sauce and for a while Hervé stood by our table musing that what it really lacked as a dish was chestnuts.

This south London wine bar and brasserie set in a refurbished English boozer is managed by a couple of French brothers - maitre d', Nolan, and head chef, Florent.

Live music upstairs, in the Piano Bar, plays an important part in evenings here.

The ground-floor brasserie serves rustic French fare.
