Caravan Exmouth Market

Caravan Exmouth Market

Well travelled food and mighty fine coffee, in an old grain store. Open all day for breakfast, brunch, lunch, dinner, take-out coffee, pizza and baked goods.

Warm Yourself Up With Mulled Cider At Caravan | Londonist

Review analysis
food   ambience

The evening we head to Caravan in Exmouth Market, things aren't going the eatery's way — a broken extractor fan means it can't serve hot food.

Outside, Exmouth Market is decked out with a simple string of Christmas lights, zigzagging their way down the street, in contrast to other parts of London which try to outdo each other with the most decadent lights known to man.

The mulled cider harmonises perfectly with this stripped back but classy vibe: sweet, warming and stylish.

Despite the trying situation, the small plates of food still satisfy.

The best small plate on offer is the roasted beets served on goat's curd, which is beautifully arranged and tastes even better through its juicy sweetness.

Review Caravan King's Cross

The second branch of the small plates-focused original on Exmouth Market, it’s a big Kentishtowner fave, and on a different scale to its cramped sibling.

In fact, outside certain regular haunts in NW5 and Soho, the King’s Cross branch is the restaurant I’ve probably eaten at more than any other in the last year.

And if this all sounds a bit adventurous for a midweek after-work supper, there’s always the pizza menu: a basic marguerita is just £7, or there are intriguing combinations like chilli roasted butternut squash, pesto, and piquillo.

Original: Exmouth Market restaurant Caravan King’s Cross is a leveller, too.

With the fashion college next door, they know it’s important not to alienate a younger hip crowd with smaller budgets, so the whole experience is laidback (detractors might argue, infuriatingly so), with a big bar area, and affordable-ish drinks (decent prosecco on tap, Camden beer, and the usual array of Venetian aperitifs such as negronis).

As you’d expect from the name, Caravan’s food is pretty well-travelled.

From dawn til dusk (and a little later this time of year) Caravan serves up a little bit of everything from almost everywhere: a breakfast of jalapeno cornbread with tomatillo salsa, smoked pimenton cotija and fried eggs, can be followed up any time of day with chaat masala braised oxtail with amchoor yoghurt, chilli and crispy shallots and a pumpkin seed matcha cheesecake.

Caravan has been making its way around London too.

From humble neighbourhood origins in Exmouth Market, Caravan went on to jump start the foodie influx into revamped King’s Cross, before setting up camp in Bankside and the City too.

If you stick around from breakfast til late, the cocktail list is worth the wait.

Staff are charming and competent, and the menu is a tempting read, comprising many small plates and a handful of larger ones.

Confit rabbit and smoky black pudding terrine comes with pickled nectarine and toast; squid pancake with Japanese brown sauce, mayonnaise and seaweed salt.

We also relished a deep-fried duck egg, and a sharing plate of merguez sausage, falafel, houmous, aubergine relish, sheep’s cheese, carrot pickle and pitta.

And you should – chocolate and espresso pudding with crème fraîche sorbet is just one of several classy options.

For a less expensive option, head here for breakfast.
