As the Post Office gives up the ghost piecemeal, we hope it'll have the common decency to sell off every single one of its properties one by one to the Antic pub group.

No queues or overpriced stationary at this ex-PO — just excellent cask ale (five usually, from the likes of local brewers Brockwell and Brick), and the kind of kitsch 1960s decor that should be a bit much, but somehow hits the nail on the head.

Rest your tipple on Formica tables or old school desks at this playful pub, which more than hints at its former purpose, with stamps for wallpaper, and shiny post boxes marked 'Country' and 'London'.

Lounge in the front room and devour a smoked duck and mango salad, or hunker out back in one of the former vaults and nurse a glass of Volden — an exclusive Antic ale.

With retro and recycling being the flavours of the moment, how very on-trend of the Antic pub company to convert a former 1960s post office into their latest bar.

Interesting spaces abound in this building, with back offices converted into a variety of kitsch snugs – my favourite being the one with the metal strong room door (presumably where bags of cash were stashed for paying out pensions and benefits).

The main room has a vibe: cosy, low-lit banquette nooks to the side, while centre stage it’s all cheap formica tables and industrial-strength lino.

A generous wooden bar emulates the original post office counter – albeit without the attack-resistant payment windows.

The offer was marginally boosted by a half-decent burger and a surprisingly good pear and peach crumble, but we’d say this bar’s strictly for the beer drinkers.
