Dartmouth Arms in Tufnell Park, London Pub Review and Details

food

Set in a quiet back street, for many years the Dartmouth Arms has offered a good medium between the full-on gastro of the Lord Palmerston and the more hardcore boozers of Junction Road.

In came some heavily patterned flock wallpaper and the back room dispensed with the wood panelling in favour of that gastro staple 'battleship grey', now becoming a full-on dining area, only hosting events (such as the book club and quiz night) from Monday to Wednesday.

On the drinks front, there is a good selection of bottled cider and three ales on the pumps, but we also overheard a number of locals bemoaning a recent change in the drinks available: indeed we noted that the excellent Aspall's has now vanished.

Meanwhile food quality has suffered an unfortunate recent and serious decline; apart from our own poor meal, we saw a number of dishes being returned or only half eaten - prices aren't cheap either.

We do like it here, but recent changes have meant the overall quality has taken a turn for the worse, which is reflected in the rating decline.

Well, after nearly 200 years of pulling pints, the longstanding York Rise watering hole was threatened with possible demise, before locals fought for it to become a “community asset” in 2014.

Photo: Faucet Inns Anyway, in 2015 Faucet began work on the upstairs while trying to flog the downstairs pub part for nearly £2 mill.

In stepped a heroic Andy Bird, an established pub and bar operator, most respected for saving lovely community pub the Chesham Arms in Hackney (one of our preferred pit stops should we find ourselves that way).

Well, rather than a posh gastropub, the place will be restored to its former Victorian glory along the lines of the nearby Southampton Arms: all simplicity, neighbourhood vibes, good conversation and artful understatement.

Follow the Dartmouth Arms (35 York Rise NW5) on Twitter @dartmoutharms for more details on the opening on April 21st.

Tufnell Park pub brought back to life by the team behind Hackney’s Chesham Arms.

Tucked away on a side street in Tufnell Park, you might not stumble across the Dartmouth Arms by accident, but this community asset pub is worth seeking out.

The north London boozer has been around for years, but it’s recently been given a new lease of life by the team behind the Chesham Arms in Hackney – an old-school East End pub that was on a trajectory towards being turned into flats until the locals stepped in and saved it through community campaigning.

Before Andy Bird – owner of several London pubs – took it under his wing, it had been closed and empty since 2015.

Thankfully, the beer selection is much more extensive than what you get in your standard watering hole, with lots of independent beers on tap including a hoppy American pale ale from 360 Degree Brewing Company and London brews from Wild Card Brewery and One Mile End Brewery.

The two public bars have been restored, serving a traditional English pint (currently London Pride, Old Speckled Hen and Brakspears) as well as a carefully selected range of wine by the bottle and glass.

There is also a choice of coffee, a range of teas, plus soft drinks, lagers, cocktails and spirits.
