The People's Park Tavern

The People's Park Tavern

People's Park Tavern

The People’s Park Tavern is a village pub and brewery beside Victoria Park in the heart of East London, serving hearty, traditional pub food as well as a range of our own brewed People’s Pints.

Inspired by the park itself – created as it was for the ordinary people of the East End – Victoria Park received the moniker the People’s Park, and this is where we take our name.

Expect great beer, hearty roasts, DJs every weekend and fun in the super cool hacienda garden, voted one of the best in London by many publications.

Once known as The Britannia, this vast Victoria Park boozer has transformed itself into the not so easy on the tongue, ‘The People’s Park Tavern’.

The name was inspired by the old moniker once given to the next door Victoria Park and the change has brought with it a new take on the giant beer garden, a new food menu and an on-site micro brewery to establish its very ‘now’ credentials.Although the location – far from any Tube line - might suggest that this is one for Hackney locals, the quality of the venue attracts visitors from all over.

Victoria Park Village is a destination and the short walk to The People’s Park Tavern for good beer, a modern-gastro interior and similarly gastro food is nothing.First the food; the menu highlights include beef wellington, scallops and pork cheek & crispy ham hock which all look like they would make an appealing end to a long walk around the park.

Producing the People’s Pilsner, IPA and Porter, there is a selection of craft beer fresh from the source.

As well as their own brews they stock a selection of quality beers from around the world.Friday and Saturday nights are sound tracked by DJs playing anything from rock n roll to hip-hop – just depends on which night you turn up.

When we ordered our first round of drinks at 4 pm we were told the wait for food was an hour.

Back in the queue again to order our food but by the time we were served at 4.30 they were COMPLETELY OUT OF FOOD EVEN FOR A PREGNANT LADY AND CHILDREN WHEN WE HAD BOOKED A TABLE.

They are always full, this wasn't an unusual day but there is always a long queue for the bar and food runs out regularly even by 4.30.

This wasn't a one off, they need to rethink how many staff they have, how they serve food and drink and how the kitchen is organized.

Won't be going back for food anytime soon.

People's Park Tavern | Bars and pubs in South Hackney, London

But the main draw is the sprawling beer garden, with pretty bunting and a constant summertime crowd enjoying pub grub and pints.

The burgers are the pick of the menu, and offer far better value than the main selection of larger plates.

As for booze, the pub houses its own microbrewery, as well as a strong line-up of gins.

Staff are friendly and offer good, natural patter, even when the pub is at its busiest, and the regulars seem pleased to chat.

So stay awhile at the People’s Park Tavern and you’re sure to make a friend – even if it’s only a muddy cocker spaniel.
