Cheese and Biscuits: Clutch, Shoreditch

Either way, it was hardly a friendly place, and when it too finally succumbed to the creeping gentrification from nearby Columbia Road and was billed to reopen as a “guilt-free, ethical fried chicken” joint (at least according to a press release so full of chicken and egg puns it put me off my lunch) then despite some doubts I prepared to welcome it.

After far too long trying to attract someone else’s attention, a slightly more senior Irish woman appeared who went through the motions for a few seconds before literally losing interest between mains and sides and went off for a far more interesting chat with a male colleague.

Even more distressing was the fact the chicken itself - and this applied to the roast too - was actually of fairly good quality, which possibly went some way to explain why three bits of it came to £11.

A £4 bowl of very mayonnaise-y coleslaw (from a section headed “Sloppy Sides”) was eaten because it was edible, and for that we were most grateful, but if I’m paying £11 for three bits of chicken, even if they had been any good, is it too much to expect dipping sauces (sorry, “Dippety Dips”) to be free?

It’s expensive, the food is objectively not good (and repeated on me throughout the night), the service makes you feel like an inconvenience and there are better places (this is East London remember) within a minute’s walk.

The interior of this converted Haggerston pub has monochrome striped floors and warm tones offers an intimate rustic chic look that welcomes its guests to settle in for the evening to enjoy the city’s popular fried chicken trend – here the chicken is guilt free thanks to the use of healthy cooking oils like a special steamed coconut oil that doesn’t have a tropical taste but does benefit from a high smoking point with great health benefits.

Also on the menu is Anthony’s version of KFC… not from the Colonel but inspired by the popular Korean Fried Chicken… however here the chef uses cauliflower rather than the traditional poultry to produce a tasty guilt-free version of the trendy dish.

The lime leaf salad (not made with kaffir lime leaves but gem lettuce dressed with a zesty lime juice dressing) is the ideal foil to the richness of the fried chicken as its citrus zing cuts through the unctuous flavours with added creaminess from ripe avocado.

We loved the soy glazed chicken with its moreish umami flavour but another highlight was the succulent Chicken Tenders which come in a choice of three flavours: Curry Leaf Sesame, Lemon & Parmesan or Sweet Soy Garlic.

With it’s homely fried chicken dishes and great cocktails plus relaxed casual ambience, Clutch is attracting a lot of attention from the hip Shoreditch crowd  and this is definitely a dining destination worth the journey to East London.

Not greasy fried chicken, plump succulent quality poultry.

Clutch, a chicken speciality restaurant, is off the beaten track, on a residential road in Hoxton.

The menu is simple: three main courses, all chicken.

But in groundnut oil, so it’s not fatty, greasy but moist, sweet, salty and spicy. We opted for ‘half a bucket’ of sweet soy and garlic chicken legs and sour and spicy chilli wings.

Sure, salads are not really much to write home about, this had the tangiest lime dressing that was the perfect foil to the big flavours of the chicken.

Haggerston hipsters head to this on-trend fried chicken joint for their fill of free-range fowl.

A clutch can refer to many things, but it’s often a group of female chickens (not to be confused with a hen party).

And it’s a fitting name for this hip East End newbie, given that – to paraphrase Henry Ford – you can have any dish, as long as it’s chicken.

And because Clutch uses free-range poultry, each limb is firm and succulent (no bingo wings here).

Portions are enormous; there are sides, such as double-cooked fries and a few salads, but you won’t need ’em.
