Tuyo

An innovative approach to food needs a space that becomes tuyo ( yours), where the food and the experience of sharing it are the main protagonists. We have envisioned this space to be fresh and welcoming, contemporary yet warm and with cultural hints to those countries that have inspired the food, without a specific theme, but full of possibilities.

Tuyo restaurant review: Fusion cooking without the confusion | The ...

But Tuyo in East London, just across the bridge from Broadway Market, has forced me to confront my prejudice about fusion food.

The restaurant offers a broadly coherent menu of tapas-sized dishes to pick at and share, designed from a pan-Mediterranean portfolio of ingredients and flavours.

Sitting at a table outside, on a fine summer's evening, the vague apprehension I feel as I look at a menu offering artichokes with both feta and parmesan slowly fades as I tackle a respectable Negroni.

Served on a bed of earthy, on-the-tooth Puy lentils, and adorned with kitsch-but-delicious squirts of avocado puree and goat's cheese, the dish comes together in a savoury clang.

Feta and parmesan sound a little odd and they are, with their umami and tart flavours, but the chargrilled artichokes are very good, as is a substantial serving of soya beans, one of many vegetarian options.

Food Review: Levantine Meets Spanish On Broadway Market ...

'Levantine small plates with a Spanish twist', runs the press release for Tuyo.

Alright, it's the currently algae-carpeted water of Regent's Canal - but the restaurant still feels like a fix of Mediterranean summer on our visit.

Chicken thigh comes as a small plate of rich, sweet warmth, with honey-poached apricots and sumac yoghurt.

Tuyo's good at the things you want the second you read the menu — that chicken thigh, that honey — and just as good at the ones you don't think will work — that salmon, those lunatic blackberries.

Purists' menu this isn't, bouncing across nations, inspirations and dish sizes with cheerful brightness, but it is purely enjoyable.

If I didn’t know any better and randomly walked past this place in the street I wouldn’t have given the restaurant a second glance, fully expecting it to serve burgers, beetroot and goat’s cheese salad and other regurgitated menu items commonly found all down the high street.

Yet, the name “Tuyo”, meaning “yours” in Spanish, hints that there is something exotic and offbeat about this restaurant.

Drawing inspiration from all over the Mediterranean and Levantine regions the food proved to be much more exciting than your average plate of food.

We had the following: Food arrived in no particular order and at the speed of light.

After all these years I’m still not a fan of Michelin-starred meals, considering them on the pretentious side but appreciating the effort of transforming food into something unrecognisable.

Situated alongside the Regent's Canal, the restaurant joins a host of impressive foodie offerings on Broadway Market, and boasts a menu of Mediterranean small plates with a Spanish twist.

Small bites include the incredibly moreish Picos Blue & date croquetas with cumin alioli and roasted walnut that were so good we had to order another plate.

Every single dish that followed was a triumph – from the octopus pepperonata with hummus and cumin yoghurt, to the salt cod, with lime confit, black tiger prawn, garlic potato puree & coconut migas.

Meat dishes have something of a Turkish flavour, with the amazingly tasty spiced lamb tagine, roasted sweet potatoes, yoghurt, marsala apricots & prunes, and the duck breast with bulgar wheat, date chutney and nutmeg carrot puree.

Broadway Market does not hope many further groups of mixed-variety wazzocks will attend again this Saturday, en route to litter London Fields with mini barbecues.

I say it’s sort of tapas as Tuyo is a glorious European, Middle Eastern mishmash of small plates and pinchos, charcuterie and larger offerings such as sea bream with puy lentils.

Expect small, utterly desirable sweet and salty croquetas made of northern Spanish Picos blue cheese with dates, but also, on the same list, a pretty dish of dill- and lime-cured salmon with beetroot served with raspberries, blackberries and yoghurt.

I didn’t expect to love Tuyo, or really to want to review it, but it sneaked into my heart because London is full of chefs who cook with no heart, making an opera of their meagre talents.

We arrived at 12.30pm on a Sunday, myself and my long enduring friend Tom, planning to have an abstemious glass of something, maybe some olives, perhaps a teensy bowl of prawn and Padrón peppers.
