Jin Kichi 73 Heath Street Hampstead London NW3 6UG
food
Jin Kichi is the best restaurant in Hampstead – a fabulous, cheery Japanese diner that does everything superbly.
Its speciality are the yakitori – grilled skewers, constantly on the go behind the bar.
These are all delicious: quails’ eggs, chicken livers, duck with spring onion, shiso leaf and pork, asparagus, and so on.
But it seems a shame not to try the sushi here, which is rolled expertly downstairs, or the perfectly-done tempura, or one of the ‘small dishes’ like uzaku (grilled, marinated eel) or hijiki (cooked black seaweed) or one of the rice dishes like zosui (rice and egg in fish stock with salmon or sour plum).
The one drawback is that Jin Kichi is very small, with only a dozen tables upstairs and down, and a few seats at the bar.

This is somewhere to come for a quiet meal with friends or family.
From the list of grilled fish, yellowtail and salmon collar make unusual but delicious choices.
The sushi is includes a range of tuna, salmon, sea bass and yellowtail.
Saké (available by the cup or bottle) makes the natural accompaniment to a meal, but if you’re in a party mood, there are also shochu cocktails.

The homely dining room is less swish, its central feature being a robata grill, framed by counter seating.
This is somewhere to come for a quiet meal with friends or family, rather than to see and be seen.
From the list of grilled fish, yellowtail and salmon collar (the part behind the fin and head) make unusual but delicious choices: some parts marbled with buttery fat, others more lean and crisp from the grill.
The sushi is also good, including a standard range of tuna, salmon, sea bass and yellowtail, plus other marine creatures.
Saké (available by the cup or bottle) makes the natural accompaniment to a meal, but if you’re in a party mood, there are also shochu cocktails.
