Duchess of Kent in Highbury, London Pub Review and Details

It is a little schizophrenic, in that it's half restaurant, half pub, but the clientele don't seem to mind too much, even with tables with reserved signs on them.

The beer's excellent, with a good selection on the hand pumps and the accompanying pies and scotch eggs are pretty tempting (we gave in - they're great).

There's also a reasonable selection of continental beers and a decent range of wine to wet your whistle.

The service is fast and friendly, although we're not very happy about chairs being placed on table tops for the cleaners, before time has been called, we're not happy about it during drinking up time either - you should wait until the punters have left before clearing up.

Closing time not withstanding, if you're in the Highbury area, it's worth a look.

The Duchess of Kent is a smart little pub tucked away in the back streets between Islington and Holloway, away from the chaos and bright lights of Upper Street, but a mere stone’s throw from Highbury and Islington tube.

The food is mostly a collection of pub classics served with a sprinkling of gastro magic to lift it out of the pie and mash bracket.

To kick off, the crispy beer battered courgette came with a hidden, oozing layer of cheese sauce to keep things interesting.

The salmon was also delicate, a smoked little number perked up with lemon freshness and a tangy potato rosti.

It was all rather nice, without being spectacular, but the roaring fire and range of drinks make it a cosy little place to dine and an attractive alternative to some of N1’s over-priced boozers.

We booked the venue on the basis of it being a “gastro pub” and relatively near to my sons new flat .

My wife had the roast lamb and I had the beef .

My son had fish and chips .

The portion size of the fish and chips was small by normal standards and the fish looked like a cheap piece from a frozen box .

The pub itself were we were sitting was cold and it was a while before the staff put the heating on .
