Gauthier Soho - London Restaurant Reviews | Hardens

In a small townhouse quietly located in the heart of Soho, a Gallic restaurant run by Alexis Gauthier, formerly of Pimlico's celebrated Roussillon - on our early-days visit, there was no sign that the magic had transferred.

Chef from well-known and long-established 'hidden gem' restaurant (Rousillon) sets up on his own in cute West End townhouse (once associated with Richard Corrigan), to offer a refined Gallic formula at reasonable prices.

We so much wanted - and expected - to like Alexis Gauthier's new restaurant.

The second problem is the food, which may well be a function of the setting: the best food, an eminent restaurateur-turned-critic once confided to us, never comes out of basement kitchens.

Some of this may have been a function of simple under-seasoning, but this is a restaurant which will live or die by its food, and only two of the seven dishes we sampled - herb-crusted halibut with ginger, and lamb with asparagus - raised more than a flicker of interest.

Noa Restaurant, down Upper Street in London’s Islington, is one such eatery, and its confidence is entirely justified.

There are many of the familiar dishes that any convert to Turkish food knows and loves, but also a selection of traditional Anatolian dishes that beg to be explored.

As always, Turkish food is best shared in a group, so bring friends and family and dig into the chef’s special karisik soguk meze or karisik sicak meze, a selection of six cold or hot meze dishes.

Any connoisseur of Turkish (or Balkan, southeastern European, or Middle Eastern) cuisine should turn to the traditional Anatolian dishes that are the backbone of this special London restaurant.

Watch as the expert chefs in this Upper Street open kitchen prepare dishes such as the ezmeli kebab, a specialty of the southeastern Anatolian city of Gaziantep, which finds Adana kofte on a bed of ezme, a traditional Turkish salsa of finely chopped tomatoes, onions, parsley and Anatolian herbs.
