So it was with mixed expectations that we approached new neighbourhood tapas joint the Highbury Arts Club.

Like its cousin Upper Street, there are plenty of places but few that truly stand out — so new arrivals are always sought after.

Simon Moore is his name, and he has brought over two chefs from Madrid to launch this new project, located next to the excellent Highbury Vintners wine shop.

The calamares were perhaps a little bit too much about the batter and not enough about the nicely tender contents but the mushroom croquettes balanced both mushroom and croquett-ishness — and passed my wife’s leftovers test.

The only puzzle about the whole place is the “arts” bit of the name, given that when we went, there were only two things on the walls that could be classified as such: one a mirror, the other an empty frame.

There's flexibility to this Highbury Park venue: by day it's a coffee shop but when night falls it turns into a tapas joint.

It was set up by two Highbury residents, so there's a community feel to the place.

The coffee comes from Square Mile, and comes served alongside brunches with more than a nod to Australia – think a Sydney breakfast (sourdough toast, asparagus or spinach, parmesan, bacon, a poached egg and hollandaise), or Sydney salmon (as above, but with salmon instead of bacon).
