DEVOTED regulars are fighting to preserve one of George Orwell’s favourite pubs after it was put up for sale.

Situated just two minutes from a bus stop, on a side street and with little to no music playing inside, the pub in Compton Avenue has played host to regulars for decades but there has been an alehouse on the site from the 16th century.

Regular Andy Gardner will apply for the public house to be registered as an asset of community value with the Town Hall next week after it was put up for sale by its freehold owner Greene King, which owns more than 3,000 pubs throughout the country.

“It is one of the last pubs with regulars left, where people who live and work around here, meet and talk,” said Mr Gardner.

“I knew this sale was coming, it’s been on the horizon for a year as Greene King has sold around 40 pubs in central London.

It took a while to get served as the barmaid was busy yapping to her mate on the other side of the bar.

The Governor came out from the back, saw me standing there, Tenner in hand, and then nudged the barmaid before retreating out of sight.

With that, the long-faced barmaid came over, unhappy that her chat had been interrupted.

Asking which ales were available, the stroppy bird behind the ramp said nothing and spread her hand out in the direction of the taps at the other end of the bar.

Then the price came up: £3.75 for an ale!

This week Get to the pub.com tiptoes through a minefield of taxonomy in deciding whether to include such premises as dedicated live music venues (as opposed to pubs that put bands on, which is where I usually see live music).

Closed Christmas Day, Boxing Day and 27 December Overlooking the Tyne and with a peeling exterior so foreboding you imagine even thirsty Millwall fans may walk nervously by for fear of what lies within, The Free Trade is a genuine Geordie institution where local hospitality ensures no one ever feels a stranger for long.

• St Lawrence Road, 0191-265 5764, Closed Christmas Day and Boxing Day, open 27 December 11am-11pm At the vanguard of the new "micropub" movement (along with the splendidly named "Rat Race" in Hartlepool), the Butcher's Arms is the idiosyncratic vision of landlord Martyn Hillier.
