Bottomless Sushi Brunch at Tootoomoo Islington; A Review

A combination of Malaysian, Chinese, Japanese, Thai and Vietnamese influences are blended to combine a selection of irresistible dishes from hot wok curries to ceviche salads.

Not wanting to look too greedy straight away, we ordered a selection of small dishes, starting with sea salt edamame, some crispy smoked chicken, the green Yasai salad and a bowl of popcorn rock shrimp.

The chicken was one of the highlights of the meal, addictive in flavour (and a gluten free crisp), it was complimented with a spicy mayo.

The popcorn shrimp wasn’t as flavoursome as I’d hoped – the yuzo mayo was light and creamy but the tempura could have been dusted in bolder flavours.

Served in pairs, we ate a selection of yuzu salmon maki, California prawn, spicy yellow tail maki, soft shell crab and kappa mak (cucumber).

I went along to the Islington restaurant last weekend with a friend to check out the new brunch menu and wasn’t disappointed.

The menu features a wide choice of dishes, grouped into small plates, sashimi and salad, tempura and grill, sushi and wok.

Among the dishes we decided on were Crispy Smoked Chicken, Vegetarian Potstickers, Hamachi Sashimi, Popcorn Rock Shrimp and Soft Shall Crab Maki Sushi.

One of the highlights of the meal for me were the Popcorn Rock Shrimp, served with nori dust and yuzu mayo.

As well as drinks and the meal, the Bottomless Brunch also includes dessert options – Fro-Yo and a variety of toppings, which we unfortunately didn’t have room for.

An interior with animated splashes of colour across walls that display its very own distinct and playful Asian setting, Tootoomoo in Islington may be on the smaller side and somewhat easy to miss, but dishing up exciting pan-Asian tapas and vibrant street food small plates; this small restaurant cleverly mimics exotic ancient techniques from across Asia, that despite not being radically different, are certainly are worth practising your chop stick stills on.

I visited recently to try out the launch of their new bottomless brunch menu and unlike most brunch or breakfast menus that feed our weekends, Tootoomoo’s brunch menu highlights their tapas style small plates that combine the most delicious details of Malaysian, Chinese, Japanese, Thai and Vietnamese methods.

It can often be hard to enjoy and even to claim to find great Asian food in the UK, but Tootoomoo has incorporated all the popular Asian dishes we are so fond of and have, in fact, done a good job of it.

These are as equally fun and refreshing and with an Asian beer or not, are a great companion to the small dishes that fill the small square tables.

Our Asian tapas style brunch fusion included fresh, the cuts of salmon sashimi which I easily could have ordered more of, piles of salty edamame beans and a green curry that matched the one I ate in Bangkok a few months ago.
