The Commissary

The Fight Business Now On at The Commissary In February 1980 a publisher approached me to take photographs for a book on boxing, to be written by the BBC's boxing correspondent Harry Carpenter.I knew nothing about sport and even less about boxing, but given a rough chapter plan on a scarp of paper, i set off to take a series of photographs depicting all aspects of a boxers journey. In less than 5 months i was lucky enough to photograph the Amateur Boxing Championships at Wembley, an amateur boxing evening in South London and a UK Title fight between Kirkland Laing and Collin Jones (London) and a World Title fight between Charlie Nash and Jim Watt (Kelvin Halls, Glasgow).

I also travelled to Newcastle and Halifax to photograph Timmy Miller's fighters, who worked in factories by day and and fought at night.

Two years later i photographed the heavy weight boxer Frank Bruno, who since his A.B.A victory in 1980 had turned professional with Terry Lawless.Over those few months i saw the best and the worst of boxing, the camaraderie, the bravery and the hard and ruthless nature of the business.

I was helped along the way by the generosity of the fighters, but also the promoters, managers and trainers. These Photographs are dedicated to all those boxers, who's dignity and bravery was without equal, and who fought their opponents with great courage and without malice.Chris MoyceLondon, August 2016
