Restaurant Review: Bōkan, Canary Wharf

Bōkan located in the busy financial district of Canary Wharf in the heart of London’s docklands opened in March this year and is a new addition to sky-high dining.

This place is best experienced by working your way down starting from the roof-top (if the weather permits) down to the impressive bar on the 38th floor and finally enjoy a dinner on the 37th floor.

Bar 38 serves up a great selection of cocktails made by a talented team of London’s top mixologists lead by Danilo Tersigni (previously Mr Fogg’s).

The cocktails are cleverly paying tribute to the history of Canary Wharf including the West India Docks and East India Docks.

Here the interior design creates a relaxed and inviting feel with warm tones, wooden flooring, brick walls and leather chairs and sofas.

The western side of the island became known as Marsh Wall, and it was also a spot where pirates were hung!

The Isle of Dogs was a thriving dock area until containerisation ended the need for such industry so near the centre of London, although there is still plenty of evidence of its shipping history.

Chef Aurelie Altemaire, former head chef at L’Atelier de Joël Robuchon, is responsible for this restaurant and she deserves to be proud.

She has crafted a Sunday brunch menu which is short but marvellously formed, and unlimited bubbles will encourage even the most brunch-hardened to give the dishes a chance – and those plates don’t disappoint.

Steamed Hen’s Egg, confit red peppers, with smoked duck and oatmeal tuile was my guest’s first course and it was beautifully smoked meat bathed with a sunny yellow yolk.

As a self-confessed sun worshipper, cocktail drinker and food obsessive I think I may have finally found the one place where all of that can and my favourite things can be enjoyed – under one very sun trapped roof.

The newly opened Bōkan is a haven in Canary Wharf and offers a luscious modern European restaurant, bar and roof terrace on the 37-39th floors of Novotel Canary Wharf and the views are absolutely magnificent.

A little higher up on the 39th floor is the utterly delicious indoor and outdoor roof terrace area.

A lovely fresh dish and those prawns were cooked to perfection.

A fabulous restaurant serving quality food packed with flavour, a bar to while away an afternoon and a roof terrace to soak up the sun over cocktails.

Towering over Canary Wharf, Bōkan may sit on the 37th floor of a Novotel – but this is the kind of hotel restaurant you’ll actually want to eat in.

And if it’s true that you can judge the merits of a restaurant based on its loo, then this sky-high spot – which, per square foot, rivals Versailles in its mirroring – is soaring.

Service, too, was as slickly competent and polite as the surroundings.

So far, so great.

Don’t expect culinary fireworks, but for a dining room with a view, Bōkan will do nicely.
