The Saints are marching into London this weekend for the NFL clash against the Dolphins and to coincide with their return to the capital Canary Wharf restaurant and music venue Boisdale is throwing a New Orleans party.

Celebrating everything that the Louisiana city is famous for – food, cocktails and, of course, jazz – Boisdale’s week-long pop-up New Orleans Festival launched last night.

The festival offers a range of menu options including an ‘Escape to New Orleans’ two-course set lunch (£19.95) and a three-course Sunday lunch (starting at £37.50 per person).

The festival dessert menu features ‘bananas foster’ – a New Orleans favourite – as well as tarte a la bouillie and New Orleans Community coffee with chicory & homemade pralines.

So, join the Saints and march to Canary Wharf in east London to enjoy the best New Orleans has to offer and sample some comforting southern delights.

The two-floor venue overlooking Cabot Square comprises restaurant, oyster bar and grill, whisky bar, Cuban cigar library and shop and live music venue.

The second floor restaurant is decorated in the instantly recognisable Boisdale signature look of lacquer red and dark green walls hung with eclectic and original artwork of super quality.

It is here that one can find the whisky bar, a 12 metre long ‘amber wall of liquid gold’ that holds over 1000 bottles of malt whisky.

The restaurant’s music programme comes with the seal of approval of no less than Jools Holland, Boisdale’s Patron of Music.

One floor below is the deco-inspired oyster bar which benefits from an awning-covered heated terrace complete with members-only area.

A highly enjoyable restaurant curiously modelled on a cod-Scottish gentlemen’s club, with no cliché knowingly ducked.

This highly enjoyable member of the Boisdale triumvirate is almost laughably incongruous.

On the second floor is an appropriately smart bar-diner that offers a brasserie menu and mollifying puffs in the Cigar Library or on the terrace, but the third-floor main restaurant has a cod-Scottish gentlemen’s-club theme entirely at odds with the office-casual modernist architecture around it.

From the £19.75 ‘Jacobite’ menu, we were content with potted mackerel, despite it arriving cold rather than warm, and relished haggis with a quenelle each of orange neep and white mash: no fussy presentation, just gut-stuffing good flavours.

A la carte prices trespass on expense-account territory, but crab tian (with another quenelle: avocado, this time) and king prawn caesar salad were up to the mark, big in size and taste.

I hadn't been to a whisky bar before so when Parisian Friend asked where he could sample some of that juice, off to boisdale we went.

The first floor is where the (oyster) bar and cigar room (yep a CIGAR ROOM)and terrace are.

We sat at the bar so as to chit chat with the whiskyteers that KNOW... more
