Review: Katherine MacAlister braves Five Guys on Magdalen Street ...

Forewarned is forearmed my friend, and had I received a bit of gentle advice before my trip to the new Five Guys burger restaurant in Magdalen Street, I would be a less traumatised individual.

Because how hard can it be to stroll into a restaurant, order a burger, eat it and escape relatively unscathed?

Choose between a hamburger, (beef, bacon or cheeseburger) of varying sizes, the same for the ‘dogs’, plus sandwiches (veggie, cheese, grilled) and fries (Five Guys or Cajun style).

But when you have free additions of mayo, lettuce, pickles, tomatoes, grilled onions, grilled mushrooms, ketchup, mustard, relish, jalapeno peppers, grilled peppers, HP sauce, BBQ sauce and hot sauce to take into consideration, when ordering for a whole table it’s a lot to remember and recount, requiring much button pushing.

But bearing in mind that a bacon cheeseburger is £8.95, a large chips £5 and a Five Guys shake £4.85, you are looking at nearly £20 per person.

Five Guys v Shake Shack - restaurant review | London Evening ...

ES Food Newsletter It could be a sign that the burger craze has finally jumped the shark or it could just mean more posh fast-food options for the Chancellor: either way, the Americans have decided to grab a slice of London’s dirty-food action.

Last week saw the arrival here of two of the leading upmarket US burger chains, Shake Shack and Five Guys, opening a few hundred metres apart in Covent Garden.

Quality burgers may be bourgeois but food bloggers’ near-terminal excitement over the Shake Shack/Five Guys openings suggest that such Americana is still hip as well as a guilty pleasure.

You can get a burger with or without cheese and bacon, with a huge range of toppings and sauces; fries (spicy Cajun-style if you wish); some token cheese sandwiches — and that, for the moment, is it.

Reportedly made with buns flown in from the US, it’s a better burger than at Five Guys, though still squishier and less robust than at top foodie burger joints.

Picture Fitzrovia, 110 Great Portland Street, London W1W 6PQ (020 7637 7892).

Meal for two including drinks and service: £120 As a restaurant critic, my body is not entirely my own; I sacrifice it weekly in the service of your reading pleasure.

And suddenly there we are, giddy with our own spontaneity, getting out of a cab in front of a huge, brightly lit picture window of a sort designed to let passers by see what a fabulous time richer people than them are having.

Caramelised onion ravioli in a sweet-sour tomato sauce, with some bitter leaf greens and lots of salty pecorino, is comfort food that doesn’t quite want to give you the full hug.

It’s the kind of thing London does very well right now, at London prices: the service is calm, quiet and understated.

Five Guys is a no frills burger joint that focuses on serving burgers and fries in a clean, friendly environment.

From its meat and cheese, to where its bacon and potatoes come from, to the brand of ketchup, cooking methods, oil types and temperatures, the focus is always on quality.

The commitment to sourcing quality ingredients and delivering a consistent great experience is one of their key differentiators - there may be cheaper products and easier methods, but delivering the best food and customer experience is at the heart of Five Guys.

It’s what keeps their loyal customers coming back for more.
