Address: 140a Upper Street London N1 1QY Tel: 020 7354 4088 Nearest Tube station: Angel/Highbury & Islington Ratings (out of 5 *) Price: Below £15 pp Service charge: NA Taste: *** Service: ** Ambience: ****The obvious choice for a pre-theatre dinner before catching a play at the Almeida Theatre would be the Almeida itself, which is located right opposite the theatre.

Le Mercury sits right at the junction between Almeida Street and Islington High Street.

As we walked into Le Mercury that afternoon, I couldn’t help but compare it with Le Sacre Coeur at Therberton Street, which is further up along Upper Street.

While Le Sacre Coueur’s interior is somewhat quirky (there is a chair stuck onto the ceiling etc.), there is this quiet charm about Le Mercury.

The ground floor of Le Mercury is filled with small square tables arranged in a tight cosy manner.

“As a group of 5 women we had a very unpleasant evening here due to being seated next to a group of approx.

30 celebrating a birthday the noise was unbearable and ruined our evening, the manager was totally unsympathetic when we complained.

Nothing wrong with the food but the booking policy needs overhauling to avoid anyone else experiencing what we suffered.”

“I love Le Mercury.

The staff are so friendly, it's cheap and the food is great.

The best pre-and post-theatre restaurants in London

Why is it that, when you’re going to the theatre, the food is so often demoted to second fiddle?

Why, when London’s culinary scene has never been better, do we not choose our meals with as much thought as we choose our musical or play?

If you’re a food-loving theatregoer who often finds themselves eating a Pret sandwich in the interval, or a meal deal in some ubiquitous Italian chain on the way to the show - stop.

This spot is ideal for early diners, and even better for late ones, taking orders until 11.30pm and providing, in the form of the low-lit, sultry Bar American, a digestif spot a mere stumble away from the dinner table.

Post-theatre, order a bottle of house red and go for broke*

food

This old-timer has been an Upper Street fixture for many years, with its tried-and-trusted formula of cod-French bistro food at bargain prices (all starters cost £3.95, all mains £8.95), served over three floors in a candlelit setting.

From the totally trad menu – foie gras and grilled goat’s cheese for starters, cassoulet and roast pork for mains – moules marinière was fine if ordinary, while ravioli de la mer was dull.

Mains were worse.

So, while £8.95 may be cheap for a main course, it really wasn’t good value.

Le Mercury seems like a restaurant past its sell-by date.
