Meatliquor N1 - The Best Garage Serving Burgers in Islington North ...

The space is well utilised over two floors and incorporates an open kitchen, massive bar should you not have booked ahead (*KLAXON* you can book at this Meatliquor so do yourself a favour you’ll pat yourself on the back for later) on top of which sits fresh tanks of Budvar Tankove Pivo with a blackboard counting down the days until the next delivery.

It went down pretty quickly and I spotted a few High Wire beers on the menu that I wanted to hit before I left – and if there’s anywhere that’s not going to judge you for making a few can quickly disappear down the gullet it’s here in Meatliquor.

I argue to try and find a better burger than Meatliquor’s Dead Hippy.

2x french’s mustard-fried beef patties, dead hippie sauce™, lettuce, cheese, pickles and minced white onions.

Since I’m on a hot dog roll at the moment (read about Hawksmoor’s new Rockadollar Hotdogs joint where Pitt Cue Co. used to be off Carnaby Street) We couldn’t look past their Chilli Dog with their own smoked beef frank topped with beef chili, cheddar cheese, onions, jalapeños, French’s mustard inna bun.

Time of Visit: Saturday; 8:00pm (short wait at bar to get seated) Presentation: Despite the fact that the room is quite dark, and the only light source is from flickering cathode-ray televisions and red neon lights – these wings looked pretty good on arrival.

The presentation is ‘primitive’ in that the wings are simply laid out on a piece of grease proof paper, upon a metal tray.

The tray is good though for sharing and I enjoyed the fact that there was enough space on it for discards as well (often wing establishments can overlook this, which can lead to unpleasant issues for all involved).

The wings were individually well sauced, but there was no excess sauce for double dipping.

MEATLiquor N1 makes a mean burger and a great cocktail, but an average buffalo wing.

Hipster-fave burgers arrive in Islington, this time with a reservation policy.

That aside, it’s the usual Meat Liquor formula: it’s 33 percent post-industrial (gunmetal-grey girders, venue that looks like an ex-warehouse, graffiti everywhere).

It’s 33 percent wilful (neon ‘WC’ sign that looks like the ‘Mc’ of ‘McDonald’s’ upside-down, in-house radio station whose policy is: ‘no Coldplay, no Beatles, no Celine Dion’).

But the most important part of the formula is its 4,000,000 percent brilliant burgers (hey, we never said the maths made sense).

The bacon double cheese burger arrived with a veritable tutu of candied rashers splaying from its sides and the Dead Hippy is the Big Mac that Ronald McDonald might have come up with if he hadn’t spent so much time dyeing his afro.
