Booma

Booma – Brixton – Indian Food – Craft Beer – Perfectly Paired

There are many pubs serving exquisite food, but it is rare for a great restaurant to offer delicious beer.

Here at Booma we will challenge your perceptions by pairing great beers of the world with the delicate and delightful spice flavours of India.

Some of the world's finest beers have notes of coriander, cardamom, ginger or star anise and we will pair these beautiful brews with aromatic Indian dishes.

Our chefs know a thing or two about Indian cooking, having honed their skills at some of the best establishments in London.

By bringing together the wonders of Indian food and the delights of great craft beer we hope to create a new and thought-provoking food experience.

So, last Friday, I headed out to try Booma, the new partner in crime and neighbour of the Crown & Anchor pub on Brixton Road.

Booma serves northern Indian small plates and craft beer.

It’s much more satisfying to think that each dressing has been carefully crafted for the dish it is accompanying so I’d urge the heads behind Booma to rethink this small but important detail.

It’s not really a Friday-night Indian without a garlic naan and luckily at Booma, it comes wrapped around some mouth-watering pulled duck and spiced plum chutney.

Sure, there are things they could work on, but Booma has something unique to offer and really does make for a great Friday night with friends.

Tucked away on Brixton Road, Booma doesn't benefit from a massive local footfall, at least not with being a 15 minute walk from the train station, but darned if that sees them suffer.

Being vegetarians, my boyfriend and I are suckers for Indian dining, and Booma Brixton know how to treat the meat-free well.

Our starter of poppadoms with spiced mango and Bhindi Jaipuri (crispy okra with gram flour) was a light and welcomed teaser before we were launched head first into the Booma experience with a table of garlic naan, Dal Makhani, vegetable samosas, a vegetable curry, rice and a potato chaat.

From the rich samosa coating and fluffed chaat to the moreish dal and the subtly spiced vegetable curry, Booma have curated a menu that India can be proud of.

Booma Brixton can be found within walking distance of both Oval and Brixton tube stations.

We've written extensively about Indian cuisine coming out of its comfort-food comfort zone, and Booma – set on an unassuming street between Brixton and Stockwell opposite the Crown & Anchor pub – uses a deft touch in the making of its smart Indian small plates, each one designed to pair with an extensive range of craft beers.

You're here for beer – whether it's the range of white-labeled brews that start at £1.80 for a small glass (beers here are treated elegantly; if you're hankering for a post-work pint, we'd suggest popping across the road first), lagers from Germany or new-school beers from the around the world.

We loved a malty, Belgian-style white beer with notes of banana from Camden Town and a crisp, champagne-method cider with our starter, made by UK wine and cider maker Hush Heath.

You can order by the plate, or pay an incredibly modest £19.95 for a five-course sampling menu.

Beers from £1.80, small plates from £4.50, sampling menu £19.95 per person.

Booma is a curry house with a concept.

On the left-hand page, a list of north Indian small plates: grilled meats, flatbreads, bowls of curries and sundries, each with a colour-coded number.

Opposite is an interesting selection of beers and ciders sold in third or two-third measures, from a light house lager through to weighty milk stouts, each with a coloured number too.

Likewise, achari paneer tikka was a simple plate elevated by giving the pillowy, mild cheese a hefty crisping in the tandoor.

But these were small niggles, rectified by a tongue-tingling dessert of charred pineapple and coconut cream.
