Fentiman Arms | Geronimo pub & British menu near Vauxhall & The Oval

A buzzy busy local with an unmissable menu, close enough that you can just hear the roar of the crowd from the Oval but far enough away to use the gorgeous garden without danger of being hit by an errant cover drive.

A short stroll from the Oval, the Fentiman Arms is a warm, homely pub with superb quality British food and friendly faces aplenty.

During summer, the back doors open up onto a wild country beer garden where delicious BBQ food is offered up, usually accompanied by a bottle or rose or two!

Fentiman Arms in Vauxhall, London Pub Review and Details

Even the most hard-bitten fan of the traditional pub experience has to admit that this place does what it does effectively (you sense there's as much thought been put into the dcor as into the food and drink).

There were still real ales the hand pumps, and the food was decent enough.

All-in-all it's a pretty relaxed place.

Unfortunately, my lunch at The Fentiman Arms was soured a little - which is a shame as I have had very good nights in the past.

The service was a little slow, however, Sunday lunch will always be that way.

But, when the waitress took the order, we all ordered mains and I asked for a portion of the Mac and Cheese (which was a starter).

I clarified that I just wanted it for the table to share to which the, somewhat flustered, waitress looked up from her iPad (from which she was taking all the mains orders), gave me a rather indignant look and said, "You should have said before".

Then just walked off, which I thought was pretty rude seeing as we're a table of 6, spending well over £200 and due a little common courtesy as, y'know, the customers?

But did my new Oval local The Fentiman Arms live up to all that British boozing charm?

Classic pub grub that veers occasionally into newfangled flavours is the trope of Geronimo venues, and it's just what we got from The Fentiman Arms.

Paired only with an affordable red (£4.70) and pints of the good, golden stuff, The Fentiman Arms won't make you feel passe for ordering a perfectly proper beer, they didn't with us (and we're meant to know what we're doing).

From a curled up corner to a broody boxer dog on the table to our left, The Fentiman Arms may be part of the Geronimo pub generation, but its seems to be one of the venues in the group that still had good ol' fashioned pub knack.

On my doorstep, touting basic boozer fare and cosy interiors, The Fentiman Arms steers clear of the gunge tank.

The bar offers a good range of artisan gins – she picked the Hendricks, which came with a cucumber garnish and was apparently very refreshing.

We asked and received a good basket of artisan bread but, I’m surprised this wasn’t offered as standard with the salmon (£8.50) My scampi and sprats with creme fraiche tartare sauce came from the ‘Nibbles’ side of the menu and were excellent value at £6.50.

The chicken was delicious and so were the fries, but I’d have liked the option to choose the aforementioned triple cooked chips or even new potatoes.

My companion ordered the 28 day dry aged Angus sirloin steak with bone marrow and parsley butter, watercress and fries.

As my companion remarked, while you expect that kind of service in an upmarket restaurant, it isn’t standard for your local pub.

Fentiman Arms | Bars and pubs in South Lambeth, London

Tucked away on a quiet, handsome residential street between Vauxhall and Stockwell, the Fentiman Arms has been designed by Geronimo Inns to appeal to the neighbourhood’s discreetly wealthy locals.

Upmarket, clean-cut and tasteful, the pub attracts well-spoken City boys and shiny-haired career blondes who’d rather hide out with a decent bottle of wine and a plate of gastropub-type food than face the mean streets of SW8 of an evening.

It’s bigger than it looks from the outside: the pleasing main room extends into a handsome, well maintained garden, and there’s a nice room upstairs available for private hire.
