The structure of the menu at Osteria Romana is classically Italian, divided into antipasti, pasta and soups, and main courses, plus dessert.

Dishes on offer maintain a strictly Roman focus – ingredients like salt cod, pecorino, artichokes and broad beans abound, and the menu is full of classics native to the Eternal City, from cacio e pepe (here’s Padella’s famous recipe) and bucatini amatriciana to Roman-style tripe and oxtail stew.

Hidden within the lanes of London’s luxurious Knightsbridge, Osteria Romana opens its doors to bring the simple elegance and humble dishes of the Eternal City to London, celebrating Roman produce, culinary history and limitless passion.

Tucked in between the Bulgari Hotel and Hyde Park, the latest venture from young Italian entrepreneur, Andrea Reitano, Osteria Romana, is like a second home to him: reminiscent of cosy, tucked away osterias that line the ancient vias of Italy’s capital city.

Like the streets of Rome, Roman cuisine is steeped in layers of history that over the years have become part of a cultural tapestry, fusing different regional dishes, produce and techniques to produce a vast menu of Italian cuisine.

Reitano has created Osteria Romana to unravel the threads of this tapestry and rediscover the dishes of Lazio with a pared back menu inspired by the his Grandmother’s dishes.

With all of Osteria Romana’s produce: vegetables, meat, fish, delivered direct from the markets of Rome weekly, the restaurant guarantees authenticity.

The Soho original has built up an enviable rep since opening in 1988, offering vegetarians and vegans interesting, varied food at a time when veggies were still sneered at and veganism may as well have been shamanism.

Two excellent starters kicked things off: perfectly roasted squash and spinach – given crunch by hazelnuts – came coated in a dukkah and tahini combo.

Things were going fabulously, thanks, and I was ready to give Mildred a big hug when two underwhelming mains gatecrashed the party.

Mildreds veterans will tell you just how banging the burgers are; sadly, the ‘Polish’ (beetroot, white bean and dill in a vegan brioche) only hit ‘fine’ and there was little hint of beetroot or white bean in the patty.

Similarly, four potentially big flavours in a posh, vegan take on sausage and mash (smoked tofu, fennel, apple and white bean sausages) were hard to detect.

Osteria Romana is a bit of a find.

The interiors are unpretentious yet tasteful: terracotta walls, dim lighting, minimal décor and pots of fresh basil on each table.

On arrival, said basil was pruned and muddled with imported olive oil to accompany a steaming bread basket.

The all-Italian waiting staff added to the sense of tradition.

Osteria Romana seems to offer dishes that simultaneously feel worth the heady price tags while retaining a wistful air of mama’s simple cooking (if your mama is an Italian who knows her way around a pasta-maker).
