Salt Whisky Bar & Dining Room | Bars and pubs in Paddington ...

Although it’s now Indian (and has a food menu to match), Salt still offers as wide a choice of whiskies as you’ll find anywhere in London.

Amid the hardwood and natural slate of the solitary bar-room – a classy, dark, square-shaped interior at odds with the gaudy brightness of Edgware Road – Salt feels like a sanctuary for discerning followers of the grain; many customers are Asian or Middle-Eastern in origin.

The whisky directory lists 200 available by glass or bottle, categorised by provenance and accompanied by individual tasting notes.

Bernardi's | Restaurants in Marylebone, London

food   location

It’s always nice to find a good Italian in your neck of the woods, and Bernardi’s is just that – a good Italian.

This Marylebone venture from directors the Bernardi brothers (of Italian origin, but raised in Melbourne) is stylish and high quality, if a little generic.

Pop in from for a bowl of pasta, or a few nibbles from their ‘cicchetti’ menu (snacks, served all day) and you’ll leave happy and full, though without your world having been rocked.

There are plenty of places to chill out at Bernardi’s, including a lounge-y area downstairs, with sofas to sink into while you work your way through the four negronis (£9-£10.50) on the cocktail menu.

This is the place to call at when you’ve either got a serious hankering for good old-fashioned Italian carbs, or you’re planning a business meeting you very much hope will turn into a boozy three-hour lunch (a good wine list has a fair few bottles between £20 and £27).

Maroush I | Restaurants in Paddington, London

food

A midweek visit to Maroush found the basement space quiet – perhaps understandable as this branch, with music and belly dancing every night, is known for its party vibe.

Things were off from the start: gone was the bowl of fresh salad veg, the discs of bread served warm and puffy, the attentive service.

However, the food was competently prepared, and it was clear that the well-regarded Maroush chain hasn’t lost its touch with the classics: houmous was dense and nutty; tabouleh was fresh; fuul was OK, though presented in slapdash style, with no herbs or dip in the middle filled with olive oil.

Maroush kalaj (warmed halloumi cheese in arabic bread) arrived less than lukewarm.

Perhaps the management concentrates only on the entertainment at this branch; or perhaps it was simply an off night.
