Signor Sassi opened in 1984 and has since become one of the most famous Italian restaurants in London.

Our guests come to Signor Sassi from all over the world, from royalty, politicians and business leaders to sports stars, actors and music legends.

Signor Sassi was acquired by Carlo Di Stefano in 2007.

He asked Carlo if he would be interested in franchising Signor Sassi in the Middle East.

After that lunch the wheels were set in motion and on 9th September 2009 Signor Sassi opened in Kuwait City.

London Reviews: Harry's Dolce Vita – The Foodie Diaries

The latest: an Italian restaurant in Knightsbridge reminiscent of Italy’s La Dolce Vita period, spanning the ’50s & ’60s.

Spinning off from Harry’s Bar (a private members’ club in Mayfair), Harry’s Dolce Vita is helmed by Richard Caring’s Caprice Holdings – the formidable group at the fore of some of London’s most fabulous establishments, from Annabel’s to 34 and Scott’s.

Situated rather conspicuously on Basil Street in Knightsbridge (right behind Harrods), the restaurant is as sybaritically-stylish as you’d expect of Caring (superlatives apply in spades); but delivers substance and a simply sublime sense of satisfaction too… Walking in on an icy Monday afternoon, I  find the restaurant alive with a warm chatter as dapperly-clad waiters deftly zip around the narrow passage, topping up champagne glasses and shaving white truffles all over heftily-portioned plates.

I’m trying not to fawn, but really – it’s been an impeccably-faultless afternoon thus far… Of course, there’s no dearth of other Dolci at Harry’s Dolce Vita with a dedicated dessert menu for drop-in’s during the afternoon.

I don’t regret ordering it for a one-time novelty appeal – oohing and aahing as it cracks apart to reveal the ensemble cast – but I’m likely to stick to Italian classics on my next revisit… … And I have no doubt that I’ll be revisiting Harry’s Dolce Vita soon and often.

Thin spaghetti (£18.50) with prawns, chilli, anchovies, capers olives, parsley and tomatoes was easily the best dish of the evening, the pasta pleasant, the prawns a little overcooked but entirely edible, the tomatoes having pleasant flavour (13/20).

I rarely dwell on the service in a restaurant as for me the main thing about a restaurant is the food, but I will spend a few moments on the service tonight, given that it was so memorable.

The waiters had no clue who had ordered what dish (a simple tasks even high street chains like TGI Fridays manage successfully), and despite plenty of staff for the cramped dining room hardly any attempt was made to top up the wine or water.

This was a dismal evening, the mediocre food dramatically worsened as an experience by the completely incompetent service.

The dining room had plenty of customers, so the place obviously has an appeal to its target audience, though other than masochists I have no idea what that might be.

TIM CLARKE Distefano’s fast-growing group of 18 Italian restaurants earns revenues of £60million a yearWhen it comes to restaurants we’ve all heard of Jamie Oliver and Gordon Ramsay but few of us would recognise the name Carlo Distefano.

While Ramsay’s portfolio of 26 eateries has a turnover of £45million and Oliver’s 38-strong Jamie’s Italian chain makes £109million, Distefano’s fast-growing group of 18 Italian restaurants earns revenues of £60million a year.

Over the years Distefano’s flagship Manchester restaurant San Carlo has said “Buon appetito” to a host of big names including Luciano Pavarotti and Rudolf Nureyev and is a magnet for footballers to this day.

Distefano finally set up his first restaurant Coco with a partner in Manchester in 1980.

By now Distefano had acquired Signor Sassi, his first London restaurant and it was there that plans were first laid for international expansion.

Carlo Di Stefano, the patriarch of a family firm which operates the San Carlo and Signor Sassi restaurant brands, shows no signs of slowing down despite being in his late sixties.

Turnover across the group, which comprises six San Carlo sites in the north of England and Signor Sassi in London’s Knightsbridge, has jumped to £22m in 2009 from £17m – and now the company is planning a major expansion of the Signor Sassi across the Middle East, having already opened two restaurants in the region.

Although Di Stefano has owned San Carlo since 1992, he only bought Signor Sassi in Knightsbridge in 2007, after dining there for more than 20 years.

Staff play a vital role at San Carlo and Signor Sassi with 15 chefs in the kitchen in Knightsbridge and 27 in the biggest operation in Manchester.

Zuma | Restaurants in Knightsbridge, London

food

Out of simplicity can come excellence, and the food at Zuma is a case in point.

The venue may be swish (with well-to-do patrons propping up the amply stocked cedar bar), the fixtures and fittings expensive, but when it comes to the food, much of the wow factor is down to high-class ingredients that haven’t been messed around with too much.

Own-made silken tofu, presented in a cedar saké cup, was rich, creamy and light.

The barley miso, freshly grated wasabi and other accompaniments allowed the tofu to shine.

Be sure to give the saké list a proper look too: there are more than 40 to choose from.
