Review: Harrods Afternoon Tea at The Georgian Restaurant

At the weekend, I went for Harrods Afternoon Tea at the newly refurbished Georgian Restaurant, which is located on the top floor of Harrods in London (one of the biggest and poshest department stores).

If you love history and feeling like you’re stepping back in time – a Harrods afternoon tea might the perfect thing for you.

The afternoon tea is £39.99 per person and that includes unlimited tea, and a traditional afternoon tea platter, which consisted of perfectly formed sandwiches, fresh baked scones, a selection of beautiful cakes, and a special Harrods Trifle (which was beyond yummy).

One thing I liked (and where the Harrods tea differed from other afternoon teas I done, such as The Shard) was the generosity of the place.

My favourite part of the Afternoon Tea would have to be the scones (smothered in clotted cream and strawberry jam) and the egg mayonnaise sandwiches (which were soft and delicious and had the crusts cut off).

The Georgian has collaborated with bespoke interior designer Christopher Guy Harrison who has utilised skill and craftsmanship to give the inherently iconic restaurant a fresh new look.

The refurbishment comes with an expertly crafted reshaping of its famous afternoon tea menu.

Standing as London's finest destination for afternoon tea, guests can experience the epitome of elegant dining and classic English flair with The Champagne Afternoon Tea.

The tea offers guests a refreshing glass of Harrods Rosé Champagne and features a selection of dainty sandwiches and savouries, a colourful array of freshly prepared tea pastries as well as traditional baked scones served with clotted cream, strawberry jam and homemade lemon curd with the added luxury of fresh strawberries served with a Pimm's syrup.

As somewhere Christopher Guy has fond memories of dining as a child, the refurbishment pays tribute to one of the last remaining historic sections of Harrods.

Afternoon tea at Harrods, particularly the champagne afternoon tea, is not for the faint-hearted: expect an extra THREE courses on top of the usual finger sandwiches, pastries and scones.

The finger sandwiches were made with pretty much the same bread throughout (a bit disappointing), but the afternoon was saved by huge, fluffy scones served with zesty homemade lemon curd.

A cocktail glass full of strawberries in a Pimm’s syrup was light and refreshing, and a cute ‘Harrods trifle’ came in its own little bespoke jar.

The Georgian restaurant, where afternoon tea takes place, is a very traditional room with opulent touches – deep red velvet armchairs, elaborate columns and a beautiful art deco skylight in the centre of the ceiling.

So if you’re after generous portions of tea, cake and scones to enjoy at a leisurely pace in a traditional and elaborate room, afternoon tea at Harrods is the one for you.
