The smoked rainbow trout was another good dish, the trout had been bought in, but it was served with a watercress and ‘rooftop’ radish salad, together with a dill and mustard dressing.

The 32 day aged Welsh Black Beef rib eye steak was served medium rare, of course, nicely juicy and tasty, the steak was supported well with some watercress, great chips and a pretty good béarnaise sauce.

Harbourne Blue (Totness, Devon), Tunworth (Herriard Hampshire), Sparkenhoe (Upton, Leicestershire), Ardrahan (Kanturk, Ireland) and Spenwood (Risley, Berkshire) all good full flavoured little gems served on a board with some excellent bread, oatcakes and trimmings, this was a great way to finish the meal.

Apart from the usual offerings at the bar, the pub has a decent wine list with a good selection by the glass; after we’d polished off the Sauvignon Blanc we had a bottle of Chapel Down Rose, which was very good indeed.

Although walking into The Three Stags was a little like walking into a time warp, we had a great time there and enjoyed some really good food.

The Three Stags is a cool, laid-back place to enjoy a drink with your friends and also to make some new ones.

The eco-friendly ethos runs through the heart of the place and it has a really trendy and entertaining vibe that doesn"t align with the usual traditional neighbourhood pub.

The whole place is packed full of personality, from the funny and friendly staff, to the eccentric clientele, right down to the quirky wallpaper; but that's all part of the charm and that's what the Three Stags has in spades- charm.

You know The Three Stags isn’t your usual kind of pub the minute you step into the little glassed-in corner booth marked “Chaplin Corner”.

This is the snug bar where the great silent comedian’s father, also called Charles, is said to have sat and drunk, in between engagements as a music-hall artiste.

Hanging on the wall is a black-and-white photograph of the film star his son went on to become, complete with bowler hat and little black moustache.

In keeping with the pub’s personality, the food is clearly prepared with care; chips come served in attractive little blue mugs, while the chicken pieces inside my baguette (£8) are freshly barbecued, and The Three Stags is the proud holder of the Waterloo Quarter Food Festival Best Burger title.

The décor here may be dark wood, but the atmosphere is all airy and light.

There's a board outside the Three Stags that proclaims it's 'sustainable', without actually explaining whether that means the food, the beer or the fact that the pub has so far survived the carnage of pub closures that's hit the capital.

There's a punk theme going on, and the pub seems to claim a connection with the Sex Pistols of which various references can be spotted, though the internet unearths no particular tie we can find.

There are just a trio of ales on hand pump (it's a Greene King pub), and a few chilled keg taps that include Punk IPA.

We never did find out if he worked for the pub, the crisp company or was just some random oddball.

Additional unique aspects include a Trench Map of the Great War just inside the gents, a nod to the Imperial War Museum around the corner, no doubt, and Chaplin's Corner, a little nook at the side of the pub in memory of Charlie, who spent a number of formative years in Kennington.

Conscientiously sourced fare is the order of the day at The Three Stags.

All herbs and vegetables, meanwhile, are grown within a two-mile radius of the pub – and delivered by bicycle.

A small portion of the menu is dedicated to meat, which is free-range and from trusted farmers.

The menu also includes a house risotto of the day, gnocchi of the day, a house salad and a selection of mouthwatering homemade desserts.

When not serving up food with a conscience, The Three Stags is supporting organisations and schemes such as the Urban Bees campaign – there’s even a beehive of the pub’s rooftop allotment.

This multi-faceted Kennington pub and dining room is just over the road from the Imperial War Museum.

It's a founder member of the Sustainable Restaurant Association, so expect the kind of renewable food that might make those destructive bits and bobs at the museum blush.

They're cooked in an authentic, wood-fired stone oven and are served alongside a modern-European food menu that ranges from a crispy pancetta, watermelon and fig salad to sage and thyme-marinated pork chops, fillets of Cornish silver mullet and pan-fried mackerel served with a roasted beetroot, spinach and rocket salad and horseradish mousse.

A good selection of draught beers includes Green King IPA, Old Speckled Hen, Ruddles and Timothy Taylor.

There's a short selection of cocktails, too.
