The Grapes has been a prominent feature of the north end of High Street for 140 years.

Situated on the corner of Benhill Avenue, it was built by Charles Martin in c1867, on the site of a coach house and stables.

Originally an hotel, The Grapes has changed hands many times.

More recently, it was renamed The Corner House and then Pitchers Sports Bar, but has since reverted to its original name.

And to the rear is a small balcony offering the blissful prospect of sitting with a pint on a sunny autumnal lunchtime, overlooking the Thames at high tide as it surges around the ankles of an Antony Gormley statue and slaps powerfully against the weathered London brick.

It’s part of a handsome terrace of Georgian Blitz survivors, among them the home of Sir Ian McKellen, co-owner of the Grapes with the director Sean Mathias (his former partner) and newspaper magnate Evgeny Lebedev.

Downstairs, you can savour sausage and mash with onion gravy and “pie of the day with chunky chips” for £7.50.

The floor between the bar and the balcony is covered with red lino, the walls with pictures of Dickens and bookcases in which his works feature prominently.

The Grapes is described thus in the magisterial opening chapter of Our Mutual Friend: A tavern of dropsical appearance …long settled down into a state of hale infirmity.
