At the risk of repeating myself, it makes no sense that just so many Greek restaurants in the capital are so bad - the cuisine isn't a million miles away from Turkish and there are more good ocakbasi than you would ever want, and the Greek community in London is equally long-established and successful.

London even has a smattering of good Mexican restaurants now, and there must be far fewer Mexicans making their way over the Atlantic than there are Greek Tavernas already up and running.

In fact, flavourless kebabs has been a bit of a feature of Greek restaurants in London generally - either they really do like their meat as bland as possible, or the quality of the raw ingredients back home means they can skimp on the seasoning and still enjoy a nice end result.

I will say this about Tsiakkos and Charcoal - there was a hell of a lot of food (not even counting the extra kleftikos) for your £20 and they refilled the bread without asking, so even though there wasn't much to shout about you still felt like you were just about getting good value.

This may be deeply unfair to however many excellent Greek restaurants there are out there that have yet to feature on this blog, but I have a suspicion that Tsaikkos and Charcoal may, in fact, be as good as this food gets in London.

A large group of us met one evening to try the Greek cuisine on offer at Tsiakkos & Charcoal, a little restaurant in Maida Vale with a tiny kitchen and an equally tiny eating area.

The whole meal felt like eating in someone’s living room and we’d heard the food was some of the best Greek food in London.

First up of the meats was a ‘slow burnt’ pork, a long cooked large chunk of pork that was falling apart.

Altogether, a lovely meal at a good price – with drinks and the baklava, it ended up being something like £25 per head.

The place is good for groups, especially with the meze option, but do make sure to book in advance!

Tsiakkos & Charcoal is about as local as you can get, and the passion felt when you enter this London restaurant in Maida Vale is infectious.

Kick things off in true Greek style at Tsiakkos & Charcoal with a few mezze plates to share.

Some of our favourites include, loukanika of Greek pork sausage from the chargrill, beetroot salad drenched in lashings of olive oil, garlic and parsley, halloumi dressed with olive oil and lemon, and a traditional dip made from smoked cod roe called taramosalata.

For the main event, keep an eye out for the traditional moussaka made with layered pork mince, potato and aubergine topped with a housemade bechamel sauce, slow-cooked pork shoulder or the delectable seabream dressed simply with olive oil and lemon.

You’ll find Tsiakkos & Charcoal on Maryland Road in Maida Vale, not far from central London – Yamas!
