This used to be our treat restaurant but I ... "This used to be our treat restaurant but I am afraid the quality of the cooking has gone down and the prices have gone up.

I would struggle to get the price below £100 per person.

One of the Teppanyaki chefs cooking was really quite bad, we had to send dishes back."

Japanese as it should be.

The only drawback are the price's, it is far from cheap but then again I don't know a cheap Japanese restaurant.

ES Food Newsletter This review was first published in May 2001 The Japanese restaurant DEFUNE, which used to occupy quite noticeably run-down premises in Blandford Street, has relocated to a cool corner site in George Street.

Defune is a name bandied about among serious sushi eaters with deep pockets - properly cut and constructed, the raw fish and rice snack does not come cheaply.

Not surprisingly a smarter look has only added to the expense of eating interesting sushi and sashimi.

It is the sushi chef who remains king at Defune.

Such a system doesn't make for a jolly evening, especially when you note the 15 per cent service charge on what are already hefty prices.

The food had been extraordinary - I cannot begin to recall the exact details - though I will never forget my first taste there of fatty tuna and the remarkable light crunch enclosing custard-like cubes of fried bean-curd.

I have been enjoying sashimi lunches at the sushi bar at Defune for, I guess, about five years, on and off.

In fact, I have always thought that consuming several slivers of fatty tuna (for me, the very pinnacle of sashimi) is the closest thing to eating best beluga.

A serving of fatty tuna sashimi at Defune is £16 - although you could not eat two, so rich it is.

Two exceptional examples are sweet shrimp sushi and rolled sushi with chopped fatty tuna and spring onion (both £9.20).
