Upstairs Dining at The Portman Pub & Restaurant, Marylebone

Review analysis
food

Like its sister pub, The Only Running Footman down the road in Mayfair, The Portman features a lively pub downstairs with a more subdued tablecloth serviced restaurant upstairs.

The two pubs share similar menus and wine lists, but the vibe’s a bit more laid back and casual at The Portman.

Remembering how much I loved my crispy squid, coriander and spring onions with chilli and lime aioli when I visited the Footman last month, I was curious to see how Portman’s version (£8.50 as a starter, £13.50 as a main) compared.

A scoop of coconut sorbet (£1.95) – another remembered yummy from my dine at the Footman – ended things on a deliciously smooth and creamy note.

The Portman is located at 51 Upper Berkeley Street, W1H 7QW.

The Portman in Marble Arch, London Pub Review and Details

Formerly a cosy Hall and Woodhouse pub, this one's had a change of owners and a complete makeover.

It's a pleasant place and along the lines of what we're starting to accept as modern 21st century pubs - and still all shiny and new.

A drink is still possible without eating - although half the tables in the pub area downstairs were set for eating in the middle of he afternoon.

As in its previous incarnation, the pub's not a huge place, but the changes they've made to the interior have opened it out nicely.

The friendly staff and decent beer make it a good place for an afternoon sitting with a pint, reading the paper.

A handsome gastropub in Portman Village, Marylebone.

Leather banquettes, suede chesterfields, crisp linen and gleaming glassware give it a bit of class but - pleasingly - there are plenty of nods to the traditional old boozer this once was.

There's even a good selection of real ale on tap.

Breakfast and brunch options prove popular here too.

There's a solid selection on offer, from pastries and continental options to boiled eggs with soldiers, eggs benedict, Loch Fyne smoked salmon with scrambled eggs, buttermilk waffles with bacon and maple syrup, and a good-old traditional English breakfast.
