Bocconcino review: high-end Italian food in Mayfair | Wrap Your Lips ...

This semi-scandalous tid-bit is surprisingly often followed with an admission of the quality of the food… With interests suitably piqued a visit seems almost inevitable, and so it is that I find myself walking to Bocconcino for lunch.

Located down Berkeley Street, in between Green Park and Berkeley Square, it is amongst good company.

While we also love the simplicity of slow cooked artichoke hearts, we all broadly agree that the tuna tartare is missing something.

We love the buttery layers of pastry interleaved with raspberries, Chantilly cream and shaved chocolate.

Because Bocconcino is a brand new Russian-owned Mayfair Italian, a restaurant that pretty much writes its own review.

The slightly tragic, special-edition supercar parked outside; the idiotic layout of the front desk, a masterpiece of style over substance, which ensures that anyone larger than a matryoshka doll will struggle to both enter the door and ask after one’s table at the same time; and the harried receptionist who, when given the name of the booking, looks flustered.

Then there’s the clown who sits on the table next door, baseball cap worn backwards (the wretched creature was at least 35), and proceeds to talk at his mate for a whole half-hour about St Tropez, start-ups, titanium-plated mobile phones and what to do with the body of a dead hooker in a presidential suite.

Fresh, pert, lactically oozing burrata, as fine as you’d find anywhere.

Pizza is also a few notches above OK, with thin, crisp base and billowing, fire-blistered crust.

I have a Casio watch and I do not wear pointy shoes while P has good taste in clothes, but not expensive.

P wants pan-fried king prawns to start, fearing that anything heavier will lead to defeat on pasta and these turn up in generous quantity simply done (heads on, trousers off) and with a very good smokiness from the skillet.A bed of rocket and a squeeze of lemon is all they need.

Pasta for mains because  much as I do like a pizza if there is also pasta on the menu then it’s no contest;  black ink spaghetti with calamari and bottarga is my choice, there’s something about Goth spaghetti that always attracts me, but then I’m a big Cure fan too. This comes in just the right quantity, a jet-black tangle of perfectly cooked pasta shot through with the salty roe.

A good vongole does not leave the meat in the pan, instead there should be some loose in the pasta and some still in the shells,  as winkling them out is all part of the fun.

Ah yes greed and taste, Mayfair is often accused of having too much of one and not enough of the other but this restaurant is actually pretty good on both counts.

The menu is an eclectic mix of dishes – there are plenty of pizzas, pasta dishes and a good selection of classic and innovative antipasti and secondi.

We order a couple of antipasti dishes and a sharing portion of the signature lobster linguine with cherry tomatoes to get things started and enjoyed the paired San Marzano,Talo, Verdeca IGP Puglia, 2015 which was fresh and minerally.

Sharing was an excellent idea – we would never have managed a full portion each but, it would have been tragic not to have tried this stunning dish.

Paired with a  Malvasia Nera, a wonderful red wine from Italy’s Apulia region, with fresh cherry and spicy notes, good structure and body, we were very happy.

If you are not a fan of lobster, the pasta dishes include a wonderful sounding tagliatelle with wild boar ragu or tagliatelle al tartufo nero pregiato.

A carb-heavy meal of garlic bread, creamy pasta carbonara topped with lots of freshly grated parmesan and a glass of full-bodied Chianti is pretty much the way to anyone’s heart.

And it just so happens that you can find that, and much, much more on the menu at Bocconcino on Mayfair’s Berkeley Street in London town.

Bocconcino’s food offering, whether for breakfast, lunch or dinner, has so many intriguing yet classic dishes that it’s tough to know where to start.

For mains at Bocconcino you can choose between lots of pizzas, pastas, meat, poultry, fish and seafood, salads and more.

If you’re heading out for dinner at Bocconcino in Mayfair, you should order the Filetto Rossini, a Scottish fillet of beef served with duck foie gras and black truffles with a side of fries and green beans.

Bocconcino | Restaurants in Mayfair, London

It specialises in authentic wood-fired pizzas, with options ranging from a margherita and a Napoletana to a quattro formaggi, a diavola, a calzone con prosciutto and a pizza bocconcino - topped with the mozzarella balls from which the venue takes its name.

It's not all about the pizzas, though.

Antipasti such as raw Sicilian red prawns and boards of cured Tuscan meats lead into wild boar ragu tagliatelle, black ink fish ravioli and orecchiette with aubergine, tomatoes and salted ricotta.

Much of the seafood and meat is cooked over an open fire.
