This year-old outpost of the famous NYC steakhouse brand – part of the Adelphi, just off the Strand – inspires very mixed feedback.

Its business appeal is evident: it’s “very spacious”, “very well furnished (if you like that ‘prestigious’ US steakhouse furnishings and decor thing)”, and provides “a 500+ bin wine list featuring some esoteric US vintages”.

The first time I ate at Harry's Bar in Venice, I made the booking three months in advance to be sure of getting a table at lunchtime.

By the time I return, Cipriani himself will be in New York, Venice or Uruguay, clearing plates, shaking hands, bringing chocolate ice-cream, like his father before him.

Colleague J has suggested  a trip to C, for V’s birthday.

A lawsuit was filed by the owners of the Venice-based Hotel Cipriani,  to prevent the from using the name Cipriani, in case anyone might think it was related to the other really is a Cipriani restaurant, owned by Guiseppe Cipriani, son of the founder of the original Harry’s Bar in Venice, in 1931.

V and J both have the cucumber, string bean, sweetcorn and cherry tomato salad; a decent bowlful but at the same price as my puntarelle, it’s too expensive for the simple salad it is.

I follow with grilled Branzino, otherwise known as sea bass and I wonder whether they call it by its Italian name (nothing else is) so as not to confuse it with the Chilean Sea Bass, of which more later.

V and J do much better with their Patagonian Toothfish, otherwise known as Chilean Sea Bass.

In August 2014 it was announced that this site was being taken over by the Frescobaldi family from Italy, a new restaurant to open in due course.

C London is the new name of what was formerly Cipriani restaurant, which opened in 2004.

The menu itself offers traditional Italian dishes, some directly from the original Harry’s Bar in Venice.

The wine list had selections such as Alois Lageder Selection Riff Pinot Grigio 2010 at £48 for a wine that retails at £8, the excellent Jermann Vintage Tunina 2009 at £105 for a wine that you can find in the shops for £34, and Gaja Rossy Bass Langhe 2010 at £150 for a wine that you can buy for £38 in the high street.

The menu is lengthy, with 18 starters alone, and prices that accompany the wine list.
