Kiri Restaurant Review: Modern Japanese Cooking and Sake ...

Apart from the food, one of the most exciting things about Kiri is its Sake selection.

The food here at Kiri is all about sharing and while everyone in London loves the concept, I don’t – because when the food is as good as it is here, you’ll simply want it all to yourselves.

That’s what I like about this place, they haven’t produced a dizzyingly long menu, but instead listing just right amount to focus careful attention on each plate of food – such as the wagyu beef tataki.

The Kiri special house vegetable salad, full of carrots, greens and a lovely house dressing was fantastic, but one dish in particularly was worth ordering a second helping of – the aubergine.

There was nothing bad here at Kiri at all in terms of food, but one dish I felt needed a little work was the kimchee fried rice with Japanese mushroom and fried egg.

Kiri Japanese izakaya launches in Mayfair from Chisou team | Latest ...

Mayfair's Japanese restaurant Chisou has just opened Kiri.

They're describing it as the baby of a family which also has restaurants in Knightsbridge and Chiswick.

What that means in practice is that it'll serve modern Japanese dishes with some Korean influences.

So you'll find Korean fried chicken alongside miso black cod and spiced sweet potato croquettes alongside hirata buns and kimchee fried rice with Japanese mushrooms.

Kiri is now open at 22-23 Woodstock Street, London W1C 2AR.

food

Inside, with its bistro chairs, tarnished mirrored bar lined with simple carafes and sake barrels on the wall, it feels like you’re in an izakaya whose owner was taken with Parisian brasseries, but wasn’t into those checked tablecloths.

As in a traditional izakaya, it’s best to stick to beer (Asahi on draft) and sake (a fairly comprehensive selection ordered by region).

The menu has all of the izakaya classics.

Everything was wonderfully fresh and meltingly good, especially the lovely, brightly coloured tuna.

And while the tuna tataki was fresh and soft, the daikon radish inside was flabby.
