A wine bar and restaurant, originally called "Fino's Wine Cellar" and still has that name on the side.

Former Name(s): Fino's Wine Cellar.

Owner: Fino's (website).

Fino's Wine Cellar, 123 Mount Street, Mayfair, London, W1K 3NP ...

This branch of Fino's Wine Cellar is an underground wine bar consisting of one long bar and a function room at the back as well as plenty of cave-like alcoves.

The bar is family run and the owners make fresh crisps on the premises which are given away free of charge.

Boisdale are a group of Scottish men’s dens – very much Boysdale, as it were – places of single malt whisky, cigars and fine wine.

All come from owner Ranald Macdonald – who reminds me of the late Rick Parfitt, if Parfitt were descended from highland aristocrats – a man who recalls smoking his first cigar as “a bit like, but not quite as good as, having sex for the first time”.

It lives where the cosy Fino’s Wine Cellar once was, and while there’s red all over the walls, somehow everything feels fairly civilised, with its mahogany panels and old Sinatra LPs as decoration.

There’s a feel of an old bistro: they offer sharing plates ("British Tapas" is not an expression I imagine Macdonald signed off personally), charcuterie and three rarebits, while starters and mains offer plates of traditional Scottish fare given an upmarket makeover: think Dumfriesshire haggis roasted, Aberdeenshire steak tartare, wild venison carpaccio.

The whisky selection is smaller than other Boisdale sites, but well chosen with plenty of new drams alongside old favourites, and the bar benefits from excellent staff: a Vieux Carre and a Sazerac (what?

• 123 Mount Street, W1, 020-7491 1640, finos.co.uk, Mon-Fri noon-11pm One may assume that the other drinkers here – judges, lawyers and a few hardened boozers – have access to far tastier scuttlebutt than your trivial affairs, making this pub almost gossip-proof.

• 53-54 Carey Street, WC2, 020-7242 8521, Mon-Sat 11am-11pm; Sun noon-10.30pm Among the last of Soho's hideaways, accessed through an unmarked door, along a corridor and down carpeted stairs.

• 15 Kingsland Road, E2, The Bridge on Facebook, Mon-Wed noon-12.30am; Thurs-Sat noon-2am; Sun noon-11.30pm A low-key exterior, with net curtains and firmly closed door, behind which lies a very good tapas bar in the front and a Spanish restaurant in back.

• 169 South Lambeth Road, SW8, 020-7735 6388/020-7582 8089, rebatos.com, Mon-Fri noon-2.30pm, 7pm-10.45pm; Sat 7pm-10.45pm There are numerous reasons to visit this historic pub, not least to see its wonderful vaulted ceiling, but those wishing to converse unheard should make their way to the rear bar (through one of two entrances) where ornate wooden booths are purpose-built for just such an occasion.

• 20-21 St Giles High Street, WC2, 020-7379 3369, cpfs.co.uk, Mon-Sat noon-3pm and 6pm-10.30pm There's seating outside and counter space on ground level, but for more privacy head up the stairs to a low-ceilinged room with wood veneer panelling, scarred tables and chairs, and a window that affords a view of anyone entering.
