REVIEW: Gigi's, Woodstock Street, Mayfair - The Foodaholic

From the moment we arrived here at this hidden gem of a restaurant, a stones throw from Oxford Street, there was a quickly noticeable problem – the service.

The food here is billed as Italian, but in some dishes that’s a little further from the truth – even Asian influences manage to make their way onto the menu.

But with dishes like this starter of gorgeously soft roasted octopus with berlotti beans, all swimming in a deep and boldly flavoured onion broth – I see no reason why Gigi’s needs to deter away from its Italian roots because they do it all so well.

A sumptuously flavoured rich and buttery sauce mixed with lashings of oil, a refined lemon zestiness and a hint of sage – this was as good as it gets.

For a so called Italian restaurant the dessert menu was rather more appealing then most others around.

Where as my Nonna offers the traditional home cooked comforts, Gigi’s offered specialities that I’d never even dreamed to find in an Italian restaurant.

We started off our evening sipping some of their delicious cocktails, both Carrie and I opted for a powder pink Silvertini which we sipped whilst sitting under the heated seating area surrounded by fairy lights.

And finally for dessert Carrie had the Tiramisu,  I chose not to in honor of Nonna (haha) and went for the Poached pear instead.

We left with our tummys full, heads fuzzy and smiles beaming from such a wonderful evening.

Gigi’s can be found at 22 Woodstock Street (just off New Bond Street) and if you could like to book a wonderful evening like the one Carrie and I had, you can book via their website here.

That combined orientation means that alongside a classic starter of vitello tonnato (cold sliced veal with tuna sauce) you might find golden and red beetroot served with buffalo mozzarella and a signature dish of sea bass tartare and langoustine, served with honey and lemon caramel.

Among the fish dishes is a traditional fritto misto and pasta dishes include an equally traditional linguine with bottarga (dried, salted fish roe) with lemon, chives and celery.

Meat dishes include braised veal cheek, one of Italy’s most famous dishes, but also innovative creations such as a ‘Trilogy’ of lamb (rack, loin and a braised roll), served with celeriac purée.

The dessert list is a mixture of own-made sorbets and classic Italians like tiramisu and pastiera, the famous Neapolitan ricotta cake.

In addition to its numerous Italian wines, Gigi's list has a larger selection of bottles from France and the new world than you'll find in most Italian restaurants in London.
