London, 3rd October 2016:  The Ritz Restaurant was today awarded a Michelin Star in the Michelin Guide Great Britain and Ireland 2017.

Commenting on the announcement, John Williams MBE, Executive Chef of The Ritz London, said; “It is the greatest honour to have been awarded a Michelin star today.

This star is testament to the entire team’s dedication to delivering excellence to every guest dining in The Ritz Restaurant daily.

The Ritz Restaurant, considered by many to be the most beautiful hotel dining room in the world, has become unique in maintaining the quality and style of the restaurant, while consistently showcasing the very highest level of technical expertise and personalised service demonstrated by the restaurant team.

Williams joined The Ritz as Executive Chef in 2004, bringing three decades of hospitality experience to the venerated kitchens of the legendary Piccadilly hotel.

We’re not in Soho or Dalston; the bloggers are not going mad over this place; we are, thank god, at The Restaurant at The Ritz, a restaurant that has understood how to charm people since 1906.

The dining room is, without doubt, the most beautiful in London.

No, the dining room at The Ritz is haute Parisian in its opulence, and it’s true, it does rival the dining rooms at Le Meurice or Le Crillon.

But then the aroma hits me: wild fennel, that sweet tang of anise.

It is over all too quickly, but our senses have been delighted: rich caramel booziness, the bitter tang of burnt sugar, sweet flame-lit nostalgia to end the meal.

While £52 for the set lunch is not a small sum, it would be difficult to find anywhere of quality in central London where you could expect to pay much less.

And the point about the Ritz is that you would be offering someone a lunch of the very highest quality in one of the finest dining rooms in the world.

This happened the first time I took one particular client, who had come up with his wife to see the Summer Exhibition.

The problem was solved expertly by the maître d’ providing an equally colourful tie for the duration of the lunch.

The food is outstandingly good, so there is enough choice for even the most demanding of palettes and you will get a number of small appetisers from the chef in addition to your three-course order.

Located in Piccadilly bordering Mayfair and Green Park, The Ritz London is a 136-room hotel that dates back to 1906.

Elegant rooms range from simple to opulent, with well-stocked minibars, fireplaces, and Asprey bath products.

Some suites have views of Green Park or Piccadilly and separate drawing rooms.

The hotel has free Wi-Fi throughout; a fitness center and spa; and an on-site restaurant, bar, and casino.

Those looking for a luxury stay that's modern and less buttoned-up may wish to try The May Fair Hotel on the opposite side of Piccadilly.

But after my loud whining about arterial bleeding and catching Essex people’s verrucas, we scrapped that and ‘afternoon tea at The Ritz’ was pencilled in.

I called the switchboard and was placed in a very, very long afternoon tea queue, with a recorded message reminding me I would need a credit card for my booking, and that a table would be available for one and a half hours — they fit in six sittings a day — and the dress code for men would be jacket and tie.

There is a real sense with afternoon tea at The Ritz that this is manufactured fuss for fuss’ sake.

Afternoon tea was a room of British mums.

The tea itself was pleasant enough: scones were warm and fresh; sandwiches were those thin rectangle strips of nothingness with barely any filling that the British like to torture each other with on formal occasions.

Demi-Deuil — in half-mourning — refers to the ghostly presence of thinly sliced black truffles slipped beneath the white skin on the breast of the noble bird before it is poached in a pig’s bladder — sous-vide before the days of kitchen gadgets — then ceremoniously carved beside the table and served with a sauce suprême.

Beth and I talked about Margaret Thatcher for most of lunch.

We probably should have drunk whisky but I was impressed by head sommelier Tobias Brauweiler’s choice of wines by the glass, particularly Egon Müller Riesling 2011, from Mosel in Germany, with the asparagus, Domaine Tollot-Beaut, Chorey-les-Beaune 2009 with the chicken and Klein Constantia 2007 with dessert.

Chef John Williams, who cooked for Mrs Thatcher’s 70th birthday party held at Claridge’s, is among the 10 Ritz staff attending the funeral.

The Ritz dining room’s Louis XVI-inspired decor, with its pink marble, gilt ornamentation and rows of chandeliers, is unforgettable.

Aside from the glorious gilt, what you are buying in the Ritz dining room is a conservative formula, complete with coat-tailed service of correctly distant politesse, china plate-domes, tinkling piano renditions of familiar film themes and a general reassurance that all is unruffled in the privileged world you have briefly dipped into.
