Tibits Bankside review: Superb vegan and vegetarian takeaway ...

food

At least it feels like a secret, tucked away on Heddon Street, a vegan and vegetarian buffet bursting at the seams with quinoa and chickpeas and curries and rice and leeks and parsnips and all of the good things.

Imagine the scenario, strolling out of the Apple store with a friend, turning to them and whispering “follow me,” before ducking into an alleyway like Jason Bourne and appearing next to what Tibits calls a “food boat”.

Now, the Swiss chain has launched a second restaurant, and an equally impressive food boat, on Bankside.

For tables of four or more you can book by visiting tibits.ch THE VERDICT… The term “food boat” conjures a very specific image, and Tibits delivers on that simple promise.

A roughly boat-shaped buffet of food, filled with superb vegan and vegetarian dishes, and large enough that you could feasibly sail around on it.

I love meat almost as much as I love my mother, who fed me my first roast lamb chopped into tiny bits when I was five years old.

Chops, rumps, roasts, knuckles, brains, gizzards, liver, bits of fat… I can think of few parts of an animal, any animal, that I won’t devour.

Kate hasn’t been to my flat for dinner again, but she did agree to have lunch with me a couple of days after my out-of-character conversion from carnivore to herbivore, suggesting a veggie place in central London.

Here is the first branch of Tibits in Britain — it opened just under two years ago — but Kate tells me they’re all over Switzerland.

Kate was pleased by the lack of tofu or meat replacements, but disappointed by the lack of texture or flavours, and the fact that it was all so stodgy and oily (“It should feel like you are doing your body good, and Tibits made me sad in that respect”).

Looking for some delicious veggie food in town?

Which is why when I headed to Tibits, one of London’s most well-known vegetarian restaurants tucked away on Heddon Street, I was a bit nervous.

But I was impressed with the Tibits offerings; in fact, the place is absolutely lovely.

I would recommend the fresh salad offerings – they’ve got a lovely selection of vegan treats, such as energising buckwheat salsa dip and quinoa falafel.

Tibits is an exciting place for veggie and vegan Londoners and well worth a visit.

Tibits Bankside sticks to the aesthetic of its Heddon Street counterpart with a similar colour scheme – pine wood and trendy floral wallpaper – and spaceship-like food boat that presides over an otherwise minimalist space.

Guests serve themselves from the food boat, and, because you pay by weight, diners can take as much or as little as they want from the 40 dishes on offer daily.

For anyone intimidated by the buffet-style eating, be reassured: on this food boat, it's all hands on deck.

Cold plates are kept on ice on the first deck of the food boat and feature everything from guacamole to vegetable tartar, to unexpected standouts salads such as the dried bean salad and Virgin Bloody Mary salad.

Above the cold dishes and heated beneath special lights are hot plates so you can indulge in comfort food like beer battered onion rings or Thai veggie meatballs – all while sipping one of their cocktails.

Summing it all up: The original Tibits in Heddon Street has many a fan.

Expect many salads as well as all vegan and vegetarian food.

A Swiss mini-chain of restaurants, it's completely vegan and vegetarian food with a pretty damned fine salad bar thrown in.

Now Tibits are opening their second restaurant, this time south of the river.

At this stage, all we know is that they're based near to Tate Modern and they'll have a new "food boat" at the Bankside spot which showcases over 40 dishes.

This small Swiss chain updates the buffet concept with a modern feel.

Essentially a pimped-up salad bar, it's vegetarian and vegan food all the way, with menus changing with the seasons.

Every Tuesday dishes are exclusively vegan.

Staff explain the 'concept' as you enter – pile up a plate (or takeaway container) on the central buffet boat and pay by weight, minus a free bread roll.

Dishes look good.

Its popular Food Boat offers over 40 hot and cold dishes every day.

Food BoatFood is bought buffet style by weight and you can choose from over 40 fresh, seasonal, hot and cold dishes.

Simply take a plate (hot or cold available) and serve yourself from the Food Boat then pay by weight at the counter (there are scales at each sales point) and order your drinks.

Who Dines Here?As well as the young families in the daytime, and the regular office workers at lunchtime, Tibits is popular with shoppers in the area as it feels like a haven of calm from the chaos of nearby Oxford Street, Regent Street and Piccadilly Circus.

Ive also seen regular single diners who simply enjoy healthy, fresh vegetarian food in a comfortable and welcoming environment.
