One of the restaurants that doesn't deserve to suffer is Quirinale, an upmarket Italian on Great Peter Street.

Consistently voted by Harden's and Zagat as one of the top three Italians in London, Quirinale is smart without being grand, the sort of place where you can pop in at lunch time for a plate of pasta and a glass of prosecco, or celebrate your birthday in the evening with a five-course tasting menu accompanied by a flight of wines.

To drench one dish in truffle oil may be regarded as a misfortune, but to drench two... After a pretty impressive cheese course, we are presented with a citrus fruit salad accompanied by a Campari sorbet that we both like.

Located two minutes walk from the Houses of Parliament, Quirinale Restaurant in Westminster is named after Rome's presidential palace and also one of the seven hills of Rome.

Designed by David Collins, Quirinale is a light, airy space with cream leather banquettes, limestone and limed oak floors.

Quirinale - London Restaurant Reviews | Hardens

“A great venue for parliamentarian-spotting – it’s easy to understand why lobbyists wine and dine MPs here”, when you consider the “exceptional” Italian cuisine (“consistently excellent without being overly fussy”) at this “high-quality” basement near Westminster.

Also, “it’s a quiet room you can easily have a conversation in, and there’s an extensive list of Italian wines – what more could you ask for?”

This part of town is the epicentre of the civil service and Quirinale is busiest at lunchtime, when you’re likely to overhear diners discussing the business of government.

Some dishes (such as our fillet of venison with shallot crust, chestnut purée and cavolo nero) lack sparkle, and the quality of produce could be improved.

To finish, there are a dozen Italian cheeses and desserts such as spiced pear and almond cake with caramel ice-cream.

In all, we felt that, rather like the politicians who eat here, Quirinale tends to deliver less than was promised.
