Marquis of Granby in Fitzrovia, London Pub Review and Details

Marquis of Granby in Leicester Square, London Pub Review and ...

We've known this pub for years, and have always had a bit of a soft spot for it after many an afternoon or evening spent here.

Still enjoying the benefits of a refit a couple of years back, The Marquis has a smart feel, its decor evoking theatrical times past with a selection of memorabilia (drapes, old opera programmes etc.).

Although, with an interior not too dissimilar to many a gastropub, you might expect the menu to be upgraded too, but you'd be wrong.

The beer selection was decent enough and things are clearly governed over by a landlord of the old school.

All in all, the pick of the pubs around Cambridge Circus.

Having also acquired the building next door, the owners are dealing with four bars and two dining rooms spread over three floors, space for 120 in the restaurant and as many as fit in for drinking.

Wrong-footed by the first meal still being at 50 per cent off, I return for Sunday lunch and confront what Sir John Major might describe as not inconsiderable costs, particularly taking into account many cooked side dishes at £5.

You can get by without side dishes — main items are garnished — but it is a hefty add-on even if charred beets do come with kale and walnut pesto.

Much better — in fact first rate and ideal food for the setting — are Scotch egg (sunset yellow yolk) featuring sausage meat made from pig’s trotter coated in spiky panko crumbs served with celeriac fries, and devilled kidneys on sourdough toast.

Silken custard tart with crisp crumb, a special of the day, rescues a kitchen in danger of being mesmerised by squash and kale.
