After a hard day’s work in New Cross, PubSpy decided to pop into The Rose Pub and Kitchen for a midweek beer or two.

With a cosy atmosphere and plenty of space The Rose, located directly opposite New Cross Gate station, was a welcome sight after battling against Storm Barney’s 80mph gusts.

Previously operating under the name Hobgoblin, The Rose underwent a big refurbishment and reopened under new management – Urban Pubs and Bars - in January this year.

The Rose Inn is even a great place to make friends as PubSpy discovered when, after a slight miscommunication, they had to stop the gentleman opposite from having a smoke right there at his table.

Would a rose by any other name smell so sweet?

It reportedly had to pay a licence to Marston's, owner of the Hobgoblin beer brand, to trade under that name.

There's certainly a pronounced emphasis on food (evident from the full name of the bar, plus the pre-set dining area to the rear), and its attendant aromas.

The real treasure of the Rose/Hobgoblin is the beer garden, which harbours enough space for 250 people, with big long tables for larger groups and a couple of sheltered areas in case of rain.

Nothing too exciting on the beer front, just a competent range of familiar ales.
