It was a day of doubles, as Gary Moore was one of three trainers to saddle two winners on the card, his Le Capricieux seen to good effect under William Clarke claiming 10 lb for the yard in the A&D Staff Christmas Handicap Hurdle.

The talents of promising conditional Harry Teal were on show again as the young rider enjoyed his eleventh winner on Oh Land Abloom in the SIS Supports Moorcroft Handicap Hurdle for Neil King.

Gary and Jamie Moore received their prizes for the Jeffrey Peate Top Trainer and Jockey for last season from Moppy Peate and it wasn’t long before the pair were among the winners again as East Indies landed plenty of bets in the SW Catering Handicap Hurdle.

Jockey Tom Cannon hasn’t looked back since returning from injury last month and enjoyed another Plumpton double on-board City Dreamer for Alan King in the J.H. Builders Juvenile Hurdle and Rob Robin in the Brixton Barbarians Cricket Team Handicap Hurdle.

Rob Robin was part of a double on the day for Morestead trainer Chris Gordon who had earlier seen his promising Ramore Will left clear at the last in the Tie The Knot Wedding Catering Novices’ Handicap Chase.

Police, including a horse unit, ambulances and the air ambulance, was dispatched to Battersea Park Road in south west London shortly before 10.30am.

The red sports car, believed to have been travelling southbound, reportedly mounted the pavement on the bridge over the railway just outside Flanagans pub and the charity headquarters of Battersea Dogs & Cats Home.

Police were called at 10.29am on Monday, 12 December, to Battersea Park Road, SW8, to reports of a collision between a car and a number of pedestrians.

Luke Watling, general manager at The Mason's Arms pub, which lies around 150 metres further south, said: "There are a lot of police cars outside Battersea Dogs & Cats Home so I imagine it's very serious.

"The road is closed from the Queenstown Road junction to the dogs home so I can imagine it's caused a lot of confusion."

Top 10 things you need to know about Boqueria Tapas restaurant in Battersea: 1) Moments after exiting Queenstown Road station and heading towards a charming riverside afternoon walk in Battersea Park, you suddenly realise you’re peckish and that dark clouds are gathering above you.

3) Boqueria Tapas; sounds Spanish, but the clean-lined restaurant doesn’t immediately shout Espana, until you hear some subtle Spanish guitars and spot the hanging Iberian meats.

add an oblique but contemporary reference to the Spain.

4) Before you know it, a glass of dry Tio Pepe sherry is at hand, accompanied by a plate of acorn-fed jamon Iberico, providing you with what feels like a Mediterranean glow; or is it a tan?

8) The decision: order one authentic small plate from every section (entrees, traditional, salads, meat, seafood, specials), call it a tasting menu, and make a promise to return soon.

An Irish pub that plays down its ‘theme’, Flanagans of Battersea is worth a visit for the beer garden in the summer or roaring log fires in the winter.

As with many pubs in and around Battersea, the outdoor area is almost always full of sun worshippers when a few rare rays do manage to make their way through the clouds.

The Atmosphere Typical of many pubs in the area, Flanagans of Battersea has a skew towards locals – and many of those are clearly regulars judging from the banter between customers and staff.

They go a step further with Symonds cider (a pleasant alternative to the draught Bulmers and Strongbow that usually make an appearance in pubs) and a couple of real ales, including Flowers and regularly changing guest ales.

The Last Word If the words ‘Irish pub’ make you want to run for the shamrock-covered hills then give Flanagans of Battersea a try – it may just change your mind.
