La Bodega Negra | Mexican Restaurant Bar Soho Good news: we’ve found your new favourite restaurant.

First head to a colourful street-level café and tacqueria called “La Bodega Negra” on Moor Street in Soho.

Assuming that you have a reservation*, you’ll be invited to descend the staircase at the back of the shop, into a candlelit cave serving tequila-based cocktails and a menu that includes BBQ’d octopus; seared steak and sweetbread tacos; duck and guacomole tostaditas; red snapper ceviche and Chicken Paillard.

It’s a buzzing, hacienda-style, subterranean den enveloped by battered concrete walls; old tequila barrels; one large, deconstructed piano tipped on its side; and – most surprisingly of all – other diners, all of whom have somehow managed to fall down the same rabbit hole as you… *Reservations are required.

For a full Spanish experience in the heart of London, pay a visit to Notting Hill’s La Bodega Restaurant.

With an al fresco dining area overlooking the famous Portobello Market, a combination of the buzzing vibe, authentic Spanish cuisine and great wine will have you feeling like you’re in Barcelona or Madrid.

Share some tapas around the table with friends for the full experience; only some of the delicious choices on the menu include the Galician octopus with virgin olive oil, paprika and potatoes, homemade ham croquettes, chicken wings in a piri piri sauce, Spanish omelette, pickled red peppers filled with cod and the gorgeous chorizo.

Or you can tuck into a main course dish like the paella valenciana (rice with chicken, green and sweet peppers) or some market fresh seafood like the gambas a la plancha (grilled prawns in a garlic sauce).

Situated on Tavistock Road in London’s Notting Hill area, La Bodega Restaurant is popular for both lunch and dinner.

The avocado was creamy and chunky and punchy, and reminded me of a friend who moved to America and went to a posh Mexican restaurant for the first time.

Then we had two tostaditas, one salmon (£4) and one tuna (£3.50), which were curious little dishes, too big to fit clean into your mouth like Desperate Dan, too small to realistically share, even though with a bit of huffing and puffing I did divide them.

I loved both dressings (sour cream with the salmon, avocado with the tuna) but found them pretty similar to the guacamole; all those squishy, fatty sauces do, if not taste the same, convey the same mouth-feel and overall experience.

I loved the zingy atmosphere the most, then the tostaditas, then the feeling of innovation (we are under-served for posh Mexican joints, in this nation).

Start with the nachos (made with crispy tortillas and chunky guacamole, £4) then try a burrito – chilli fans will love the chicken marinated in a fiery guajillo sauce (£5.40) Students and locals alike flock to this small café for generous quesadillas filled with chorizo, chicken and black beans (£8.95) and great-value bowls of chilli with extra jalapeños (£8.10).

The neon sign outside reads ‘sex shop’; the mannequin in the entrance wears a PVC gimp suit.

But the real excitement begins when you descend the stairs into the bowels of this nightclub-like restaurant.

The real highlight was the dish least concerned with its own looks: a rich lamb shank in intensely dark juices.

Seafood cazuela (a one-pot dish like a wet paella), containing clams, squid, prawns and mussels, was creamy, tangy and perfectly fine, though not especially memorable.

La Bodega Negra also have a cafe round the other side (entrance on Moor St).
