The hunt for authentic Palestinian cuisine at London's Maramia

Maramia, which is Arabic for sage, a herb that Palestinians are famous for, brands itself as “the first of its kind in the UK offering real home made Palestinian cuisine in the heart of London.”

Being a vegetarian, I ordered a grilled halloumi and zaatar (thyme) sandwich, while the bestie ordered the lamb kastaleta.

The lamb kastaleta was also served with salad, along with a garlic sauce and was marinated in their special Maramia sauce which consisted of parsley, mint, coriander, sumac, saffron, thyme, garlic chilli and yoghurt.

Before ordering the knafeh, I asked the chef if he uses Nabulsi cheese instead of the mainstream halloumi that is used in the UK, which butchers the original recipe.

Overall, minus some issues we had with texture, from the service, to the staff, to the flavours and even discussions, everything about Maramia was as Palestinian as one can get in London.

Maramia Café at Golborne Road serves, freshly prepared Palestinian and Mediterranean specialities at very reasonable prices, and that’s including dishes such as tagines and falafel, and delicious mint tea.

Husband and wife team Mohammed Zomlot and Rola Darabaih are behind the business with Rola and Mohammed's mother preparing the food.

With a newly arrived baby on top of a new business, they've got their hands full.

It’s not difficult to see why Maramia Café is a favourite not just with your average Notting Hill- ite, but also with the likes of television newsreader Jon Snow and none other than David Cameron and wife Samantha who have been spotted relaxing over Sunday brunch here.

The Maramia menu includes an appealing selection of hot and cold mezze – all freshly prepared and carefully seasoned, Palestinian ‘sandwiches’ served in Arabic flatbreads and mouth-watering grilled meat and fish mains, cooked to family recipes.

Maramia Cafe Reviews - London, United Kingdom - Skyscanner

Known as the only Palestinian restaurant in London (and the first in the UK, according to them), Maramia sits at the end of Portobello Market has a great family vibe and exemplary service, with occasional music and dancing in the evenings.

There's great meze platters, makloubah (rice with veggies and chicken), knafeha, delicious Arabic coffee and a very interesting cheesecake.

Moreover, if you support solidarity with Palestine but haven't had a chance to travel there, this is a perfect place to experience traditional Palestinian hospitality and learn more about the country too.
