Styled as a restaurant and deli, the two-level space was swarming with young couples and families alike when we visited.

The ground floor is centered around the aforementioned exposed stone oven — from which freshly baked pizzas and other roasted and baked dishes emerge, such as crispy pork belly with tomato and mushrooms — as well as a deli counter, where Mediterranean cheeses and cured meats are laid out.

We ordered two pizzas: one topped with portobello mushrooms, tomato, fontina, oregano, and the other with spicy sausage, mozzarella, broccoli, seen in the video above.

They were accompanied by side orders of garlic bread, gorgonzola and walnut croquettes, and a serving of burrata from the counter menu.

The chefs’ indiscriminate approach to placing cheese, tomato sauce and other toppings on the ten inch bases with wild abandon not only results in an aesthetically pleasingly ‘ungroomed’ pizza, but one where every mouthful is slightly different: a bit more sausage, a little less broccoli, etc, etc.

Spread over two floors in a beautifully restored Georgian building, Pizza East in Portobello is a continuation of the already successful chain and maintains the high standards of its sister venues.

Located in the heart of Portobello Market, it serves as a great respite from all the hustle and bustle while also including a deli trading in cheeses and cured meats.

Boasting in-house wood-fired ovens and an open ground floor kitchen, it creates a greater intimacy between staff and customer whilst also giving you some great interior views.

A great establishment that has furthered Pizza East's already sterling reputation, it's definitely worth a visit.

I had the one with veal meatballs, cream, parsley and lemon (£12).

Veal is a very rewarding experience – serious but subtle, seasoned so beautifully here they should really make their own sausages.

Well, all the cream, unfortunately… I don’t know if you’re familiar with The Joan Collins Beauty Book of 1981: she interviews all her beautiful friends about how they stay beautiful, and her Italian one says, 'Always tomatoes, never cream.’

T says he has a new respect for cheese on toast; it’s the cream on toast you have to watch out for.

Adventurous toppings include tandoori chicken with cashew nuts (£7.45) and Peking duck with plum and hoisin sauce (£7.95) The chefs are on full view at this fun family restaurant, turning out wood-fired classics as well as house specials such as salsiccia – fennel sausage, red onion and mozzarella (£7.95)

Refreshingly, this branch of the Pizza East concept doesn’t imitate the hit Shoreditch original.

Barring a predilection for white porcelain tiles and the option of bar seating, the two are like night and day: the East Ender’s converted warehouse decor just right for clubbers; this sunny spot (with bright blue chairs, large windows and blue and white striped awnings) inspiring alfresco brunches with friends and family.

We liked the veal meatball pizza, made still more luxurious with cream, and the spicy sausage, mozzarella and broccoli combo – but the desserts left us cold.

Apart from around a dozen pizzas, mains include fillet of beef and roast chicken.

Breakfast is also served and, as with the original, there’s an on-site deli – though the idea that the Portobello area needs any more retailers of polenta and taleggio is just ridiculous.

The only other gripe is that staff insist on serving rather nice wine in chunky tumblers.

Service veers from affable to slightly snooty, but you can’t fault nice touches like American-style takeaway boxes for your leftovers.
