Portobello Road's Saporitalia: Nearly as good as Naples | Metro News

Restaurant Review: Saporitalia’s Portobello pizzas are the real deal although it’s not in the loveliest of spots.

For some curious reason, the area around Portobello Road has become pizza central.

This latest arrival looks set to have them in paroxysms of joy: the pizza here is very good indeed.

The seasoned pizzaioli at Saporitalia are ex Portobello Ristorante Pizzeria and Pizza Metro: names to be conjured with.

Pasta is equally good: flat, fat paccheri (a Neapolitan favourite) with suave veal meatballs and a frisky tomato sauce is as good as anything I’ve had in Posillipo.

A recent facelift of this west London pizzeria featured a new Carrara marble counter and a new pizza oven hand-built by a Neapolitan craftsman with biscotto di Sorrento clay bricks.

But one thing did not change at Santa Maria: you can still see the reflection of the divine in the Margherita’s shimmering pools of milky, oozy, salty mozzarella floating over its surface.

This pizza, like its demanding co-owners Pasquale Chionchio and Angelo Ambrosio, is Neapolitan to the core, its soft, delicate yet resilient crust holding up to pressure from the beautiful San Marzano DOP tomato sauce as well as from your eager fingers.

Small and somewhat out of the way in south Ealing, this team take their pizza very seriously indeed with spectacular results; it is certainly worth the pilgrimage.

- Julian Rea “I always benchmark pizza against the best in Naples and Rome and find this establishment has the best package in the UK in terms of oven, dough, top-quality mozzarella (very rare in the UK) and San Marzano tomatoes—all the essentials for a well-executed Margherita.”

Saporitalia’s dining room is dominated by a handsome clay oven, the sight of which is enough to get taste buds tingling.

Sure enough, our pizza was first-rate: an enormous wagon-wheel of a thing with a wafer-thin base generously topped with san daniele ham.

It’s wise to opt for the pizza here, as you get more for your money; our other dishes were a bit hit-and-miss.

And a heavy hand had been at the mozzarella in our baked gnocchi, leaving the dish dense and stodgy.

As much of the cooking takes place in the dining room, the space can become noisy and stuffy when busy.
