Kateh serves the latest in popular Persian cuisine on Warwick Place just off Warwick Avenue, London.

Set in the prettiest of streets, this residential setting by a canal is now home to one of London’s finest restaurants.

The project is the first Persian venture for Narges Pourkhomami and the realisation of her dream to combine the best of traditional and contemporary Iranian hospitality in one of London’s finest restaurants.

Kateh features both an authentic and modern take on Persian cuisine in an elegant yet relaxed and intimate setting, seating just 75 diners.

The restaurant also has a superb private dining room on the lower floor for up to 12 people, a gorgeous garden terrace which can hold up to 25 people and a late license, making it a must visit dining destination for romantic couples, families and private celebrations.

I don’t know the first thing about Iranian cuisine, but after my first visit to Kateh, I’ve become hooked on saffron rice.

And so the story begins, of how I fell in love with the fluff… …but first, let’s talk about the decor, and nestled deep within mews-like Warwick Place, I found the ground level dining space redolent of eating in somebody’s living room, converted into a theatre to show-off the owner’s passion in the kitchen.

I drank a glass of doogh, which was described to me as yoghurt, milk, fresh mint and a dash of salt.

As a proud fella of Chinese descent who grew up on a diet of Thai Jasmine rice, I – like many of my brethren – inherit the skill of steaming our rice until the optimal fluffiness and moistness, a skill passed from one generation to the next, from mother to daughter, from father to son… but this saffron rice recipe really beat the crap out of my heritage.

Little surprise, afterall, as Kateh is named after the Persian equivalent of certain dark arts of rice making.

Roaringly busy throughout the week, this Persian restaurant is well hidden among the elegant houses of Warwick Avenue.

Just a handful of tables are packed into a tight, conspicuously plain space.

The atmosphere is provided by elbow-to-elbow diners and by furiously enthusiastic staff who tear around delivering refined, modern Iranian dishes, and chip in with friendly chatter.

If you’re after a bit of privacy (or peace), head for the small basement room, which features a communal table and a pretty courtyard; romantically low lit, it’s ideal for an intimate party.

Hearty classics, such as ghalieh mahi (an excellent fish stew made tart with tamarind) and saffron-marinated grilled meats, feature alongside less defiantly Persian dishes – a charred sardine, basil and lemon starter, for example, minced veal kebab, or a frozen blueberry yoghurt dessert.
