Restaurant review: Dinner at Lussmanns, Harpenden | Home ...

Harpenden has acquired a classy new restaurant with the arrival of a new branch of Lussmanns Food and Grill, writes food and drink editor Richard Cawthorne The new Lussmanns occupies the former premises of the Bean Tree restaurant, an 18th century converted coach house overlooking Leyton Green, with the same emphasis as the other two branches in St Albans and Hertford on sustainable and local produce.

Eight good-looking starters head a list divided (naturally) into fish and grill sections backed up by three extra mains and seven desserts.

Wild black bream in a bag (£16.50) with chestnut mushrooms, parsley and thyme with garlic was a treat and good enough to steal the soup’s thunder thanks to a cooking method that preserves all the juices and fishiness of the main ingredient.

Our evening went like clockwork – and the food was good too.

This is an independent review featuring a restaurant selected and experienced by our food and drink editor.

Modern British tapas restaurant Black Bream takes great pride in its produce.

Subsequently the menu is always innovative and seasonal, with creative dishes such as the lobster and langoustine burger with spicy tartare sauce, black bream ceviche, and foie gras and leek risotto with a cacao and balsamic reduction.

At the bar you'll find a fantastic range of beers, wines and spirits, and an impressive list of cocktails mixed by bartenders with experience in some of London's top cocktail haunts.

The 1,473 sq ft building has undergone extensive refurbishment in order to refit a refined bar and dining area that can challenge many of the Michelin-star gastropubs.

Located on the site of former New King's Road restaurant Wimsey's, Black Bream is a tapas restaurant with a very British twist, serving up creative and seasonal small plates, alongside larger sharing dishes.

With a fantastic bar menu to boot, and a team with experience at some of London's top eating and drinking destinations, including J Sheekey, The Ivy, Le Capric and Milk & Honey, this new addition to the Fulham dining scene is more than likely to challenge any Michelin-star gastropub.

Former Caprice Holdings bar manager, Leon Costa, is launching his own seafood venture Black Bream.

Costa, who previously worked for Covent Garden fish restaurant J Sheekey, is blazing his own trail with this new eatery that will specialise in contemporary British tapas.

With an eclectic array of dishes on offer, such as the foie gras and leek risotto with cacao and balsamic reduction, or the Keralan coastal fish curry, it's an exciting prospect for any Fulham foodies.
